Superman The Golden Age Omnibus 7

For those who want to see the beginnings
This massive (and heavy) text provides stories from Superman, Action, and World's finest comics in the middle of the Golden Age of DC comics shortly after the end of World War II. The pages are in full color and, as near as I can tell, the same size as the original comics of the day. For anyone who wants to experience how the adventures of Superman were back in the day, this is a must-have.

Fun read.
Superman omnibus volume seven, is a great read. Superman is ending the 40s and heading into the 50s fighting the likes of Luthor and the Prankster as well as meeting celebrities of that era.

Fantastic, keep them coming, don’t stop now
These Golden Age omnibus are fantastic. DC, I hope you collect the entire golden age. I love the early 50s stuff most. Also PLEASE consider omnibuses for Superboy, Lois Lane, and Superman Family!!!!!

Historically Interesting Stories
The Batman Omnibus series has moved into the Silver Age, but Superman is still stuck in the Golden Age. Volume 7 span November 1948 to August 1950, this includes Superman Comics, Action Comics and World’s Finest. I feel like I’ve reached a level of sunk cost regarding the Superman Golden Age series. The Golden Age really wasn’t that exciting for the Man of Steel. Superman was almost always taking on regular old penny-ante crooks using his godlike powers. Generally, his only risks were to his secret identity and harm to Lois. It’s was inevitable that Superman would catch the criminals given his ridiculous array of powers. My favorite Superman era is the wild Silver Age. There was just so much fun and creativity. The problem with the Golden Age is that the writers just didn’t seem to know what to do with their invincible protagonist, so the stories became very repetitive. Over time, it seemed to dawn on the writers that it was more interesting when Superman was pitted against interesting foes, and we saw more reoccurring villains. The Prankster probably has the most appearances in this volume and although he’s barely more effective than an ordinary crook, his personality and MO is a lot of fun. The Toyman is a bit more of a threat but still not challenge for Superman. Mr Mxyzptlk could be a definite threat to Superman if he weren’t merely a fun prankster. The one true danger is Lex Luthor and some of his inventions this time around are ridiculously powerful such as a teleporter and a device that animates statues. He even managed to nearly push Superman out of existence. What really set the Silver Age apart was the introduction of so many new features of the Superman mythos. We are starting to get some of that fun in this volume. There is the introduction of Supermanium, the strongest metal in existence, but the real groundbreaker in this issue was the first appearance of Kryptonite. This was the only multipart Superman story I can recall in the Golden Age. After the discovery and later disposal of Kryptonite, Lex Luthor almost immediately creates a synthetic Kryptonite and causes issues for Superman for a bit of time. It was interesting that at this point, citizens of Krypton were being referred to as Kryptonites instead of Kryptonians. We are starting to get more interaction with the destroyed planet of Krypton. At one point, Superman actually travels back in time to Krypton before it exploded although he’s invisible and immaterial so he can only observe. In another story, three Kryptonian criminals arrive on Earth. I figured it would turn out they weren’t actual Kryptonians but were legit. I believe these stories were unprecedented but there certainly would be lots more interaction with Krypton and Kryptonians going forward.I’ve always considered these Superman stories more historically significant than actually good. I find myself in a situation where I feel committed to seeing this through but with 7 volumes on my shelf, they take up a LOT of room with mediocre and repetitive Golden Age stories. I assume the Superman volumes don’t sell as well as Batman since Batman has already reached the Silver Age with its 10th volume. I have no idea when the next volume will be released but I’ll probably see this through and then start buying up the Silver Age.

Great omnibus as the unbroken line of Superman stories continues
This omnibus is the usual quality found in today's Omni's from DC so no complaints there. The problem is that Golden age Superman is stuck at Vol 7. and there are probably 4-5 volumes still left to get to the beginning of the first Silver age omnibus due out soon. The pace on these Supes Golden age Omni's has slowed down to almost nothing with no announcement of a vol 8. C'mon DC show us you can do this!

Best Superman GA collection!
This is the best Superman Golden Age omnibus. I have all of the others and I'm very happy with them. I'm a big fan of the Superman villains. Especially Mr. Mxyztplk, Toyman and The Prankster. In this volume you get two wonderful Mr. Mxyztplk stories, some fun Toyman stories and three Prankster stories. The jewel of the collection is the story "The Pranksters Radio Program" from 1949. Such a great and stupid villain, makes me laugh so much. The artwork is beautifully reproduced and originally done by the masters Wayne Boring and Al Pastino. I hope that DC will continue this series of Superman Golden Age for a new audience.
