It is a tool to accurately measure an unknown angle for a miter saw cut. For instance, a ceiling with an unknown pitch while installing crown mold. It would be very helpful to know the angle of the ceiling so one could set the miter saw to that angle and make one cut instead of several cuts using the old trial and error method.

If you measure as shown in the pic with the baseboard, how does that get lined up on the saw? in the other pic, they show it laying next to the saw.

The picture shows the gauge in the storage condition. The outer arrow points to 90 degrees and in the inner arrow points to 90 degrees. If you set the outer arrow to 45 degrees the inner arrow points to zero degrees. This is the angle you would measurer for an inner corner. For an outer corner the in out arrow points to 45 degrees and in the inner corner points to Zero. The two arrows point at each other. Most Baseboard cuts are going to be in the 30-60 degree angle range. Set you gauge to 45 degree and place one arm on the back board and line up the saw with the other arm. In most cases you are just going measure the angle and copy it to the miter saw using the gauge. You do not need to know the actual numerical angle.

Do they make this in a longer length? Like instead of 7" about 12" or more?

There are longer length protractors available, just not priced so affordably for the do-it-yourselfer with small projects to accomplish. The Bosch 5-in-1 Digital Angle Finder and Inclinometer GAM 270 MFL also available on Amazon is just an example.
