Adds fun to your language learning

This book is as fun as you might expect, it teaches you words for everything from random idioms to how to talk about fake breasts, and has a whole section on sh*t and piss. But as in any country, slang is very regional and generational, so I wouldn't go around trusting that anything I take from this book should be understood by all Brazilians, especially if you don't totally understand the context. Some of the stuff in here simply isn't very cool to say and sounds more ridiculous than anything. Even so, even my Brazilian friends who tell me that are endlessly amused by this book. The book also doesn't tell you just how masculine, feminine, or dirty certain phrases are considered to be, and doesn't provide multiple scenarios for frequently used slang, so if you want to get it right you should probably listen for it when native speakers are using the phrases, or ask someone who is a native speaker to make sure you understand correctly. In the end, no book can teach a foreigner the nuances of how to joke in a foreign language, etc. But around casual friends and friendly co-workers, you'll surely get a laugh just form attempting to use these phrases ... everyone loves a foreigner with a wannabe potty-mouth.

    Useful book

*by J***R on Reviewed in the United States on September 19, 2017*

This was slightly disappointing since much of the content is just ordinary conversation, neither dirty nor slang. Also the bulk of the slang is not dirty or even slightly rude. That said, there is a lot of interesting slang in this book. I showed it to a Brazilian friend who said that he thoughtbit was good but mostly street slang if the kind you would hear in the favelas rather than in the middle class areas so I need to be careful about which terms to use in normal conversation. Conclusion, this book is probably more useful for understanding what you may here than for learning phrases to slot into your conversation. It's still worth reading and keeping around for when a dictionary just isn't enough.

    Works for Me!

I've been working in Brasil for 2 months now & am still learning to speak Portuguese. This book has made a few jaws drop after I've used a phrase from it.I have; however, been corrected quite a few times. The best way to get a good repertoire of Brasilian Portuguese slang is to get out & about & talk to a lot of people!By the way; get this book in paperback & NOT Kindle format.Unfortunately; the Kindle version is poorly formatted as is the case with most technical/educational material on the Kindle.I got it on my Kindle using the 3G while anchored in Guayabara Bay in Rio de Janeiro which speaks volumes for the 3G coverage.
