Revised. I was guilty of not checking this item out thoroughly. I had a small item I needed to flatten and I used a 4 oz chasing hammer. It left sizeable dents in the anvil face meaning this anvil is mild steel and not hardened at all.For $40 I would expect it to have a hardened face. As easily as this thing dented I would say it would become useless in short order unless all you worked with were soft metals and the hammer never touched the face.I would not recommend buying this item.** Old review ***Honestly I was expecting something with poor finish and was pleased to be proved wrong.This anvil is very nice and a perfect size for me to use peening knife handle pins and such.My only head scratcher is why they put paint on the horn.After all that serves a purpose for many hammering tasks and there's no doubt the paint will chip when used for serious work.Other than that it is a nice anvil of a proper size for jewelry and other work..
