Survival English: English Through Conversations, Book 1, Second Edition 2nd Edition

This book is older -- published in 1993 -- but I still prefer it over most other newer books. I like the simple layout and the large font, and I really appreciate the fact that there aren't any distracting instructions and headings. For those reasons, the book is better than most for adult students at a low literacy level. However, the book doesn't teach phonics or alphabet skills and is difficult to manage for low level readers unless there is a lot of verbal role playing and practice before you direct students to open the book to look at the conversation. I use this book to supplement life skills lessons for low literacy learners, because I haven't found a better option yet. I appreciate that I can buy a used copy for just a few dollars.I like to use the abc English books (abcenglish.com) to teach reading and phonics, and the books pair pretty well together -- if students can start to get some alphabet sound and decoding skills, they can start to make sense of a book like "Survival English" as long as you present the Survival English text after presenting the meaning and practice up front before reading.

Great book, use it really often as a teacher of ESL.It's of the very best (my favorite) for beginners! I teach level 1 ESL.

I bought what was advertised as a new book but it had writing in it, a creased cover and was stamped on multiple pages as the property of Santaluces Community High School.

Very good resource for beginning English speakers….practical, everyday spoken English that can be accessed right away by learners. I especially appreciate the uncluttered, easy to read format.

i teach 12 japanese students and it's perfect for them. they know enough English but need great improvement in converstaion. it's perfect for beginner/intermediate students

Although used, it was in good condition to use for my student. Great for the most basic student who has little vocabulary.
