Better than most but lacking in finishing, and specs.
First impressions upon opening, are that the safe is heavy. I wanted to love this safe. No flimsy metal box here that you often find in more cheaply, and many more expensive Chinese made “safes”. It is well finished on the exterior with no visible seams that I could detect. The bolt works are smooth and appear to be sturdy and include a relocker to guard against punch attacks. The addition of the little tab that holds the bolts open and releases them when you close the door is nice. It comes with a S&G group 2 mechanical lock (there is an electronic lock version as well) that operates flawlessly once you get the hang of how it works. And yes, the metal shelf is just wrapped in thin foam wrap and tossed in the safe with the (smallish) mounting bolts to rattle around during shipping. It doesn’t really hurt, other than scratching up the inside a bit, but it would be nice to see a bit more care taken. This seems to be a theme. As far as the specifications, it seems that Hollon has fibbed a bit. I don’t know why the safe companies are not more straightforward with the thicknesses of the body and doors but it’s kind of annoying. As seen in my photos the door is not a 1/2” plate, as described on their website, but instead a hair over 7/16th’s (including the coating). The misstatement of the door thickness is troubling, as it brings into question other claims they make. Are they using inferior/thinner steel just to cut costs? Is their quality control this bad? There have been various reports that the body of the safe is 1/4” to 1/8” steel. I couldn’t get a caliper on it to verify, but it feels to be closer to 1/8”. If I were to guess, I’d say that it is the same material that the locking pawl/bar in the hinge side is made of. The 1/8” is in line with other safes in this class. Getting into this safe is by no means going to be easy for your average smash and grab thief. The bolt works seem well made, the hinges beefy. This is good as I can’t say that the 1/8” thick folded locking pawl on the hinge side instills confidence it would be much of a barrier to prying attacks. The only visible welds attaching it to the door are small. It could be that these welds are just tack welds, but that’s not how it appears. I would feel better if they had used 1/4” or better forged stock, and a continuous weld. All of the interior welds should be continuous and finished. Did they run out of grinding discs?? The frame that the bolts engage is excellent. It it beefy and unlike cheaper safes that just use the unreinforced formed steel to keep the door shut, this safe has a reinforced, closed lip which should be much more resistant to prying attacks. The finishing on the inside leaves much to be desired. It baffles me that the inferior safes go to so much trouble to make their safes look great and luxurious, but use inferior hardware and materials. Then there is this safe, which is spartan at best with a metal shelf and a cheap thin peace of felt, and borders on unacceptable. From sharp unfinished blobs (which make for an excellent finger stick by the way, if you are looking for this in a safe) on the interior welds, to the shelf scratching up the interior, it seems like this safe was a rush job. Don’t get me wrong. I didn’t purchase this safe to look good and be posh on the insides, but seriously, Hollon could do much better without much cost. I’m not looking for hand stitched Corinthian leather here, but we aren’t talking about a cheap $200 safe either. The included mounting hardware seems on the smallish side, and is for concrete. I had to purchase bolts to attach to my carpeted wood floor. I took 2 peices of 14” 1/8” galvanized bar stock drilled multiple holes to secure them to the floor and tapped the 3/8” lag bolt holes to provide a more secure anchoring points. This is not a fire safe. Repeat! This is not a fire safe. If you need fire and theft protection you need to up your price quite a bit. Alternatively you could find a fireproof container that will fit in the safe. The pouches for sale are inexpensive, and offer minimal protection at best but are better than nothing I suppose. The steel will offer some protection if the fire is small and short lived but I would not depend on it for anything but metal for long term storage. Also this safe is in no way waterproof. One more time… THIS IS NOT A FIRE SAFE!!! Overall, I’m disappointed in this safe given the price point and locksmith reviews I saw on the brand. Do I hate it. No. I will keep it, and it is adequate for my needs. If I had it do it over, however, I’d pay the small premium and get a Gardall. The hassle of returning this is just not worth it compared to my concerns. Maybe I just got a fluke. The welder was on his last day, and just said screw it. Maybe the QA tester was out to lunch when this one was boxed up by mistake. Maybe the guy receiving the steel plate stock lost his calipers and couldn’t verify the steel thickness. Pros: Heavy Excellent lock Nice exterior Solid bolt works with relocker and a reinforced door frame 4 predrilled anchor points. Cons: Poor Quality Control Interior finishing is unacceptable. Interior welds are ugly and dangerous. Stated door thickness is not correct. Mounting hardware is on the small side. Better finished safes of comparable protection and quality are available for not much more money.

Nice!
The safe was delivered yesterday in rugged packaging with no damage. The S & G combination lock and latch works smoothly. Seems like a quality piece that should last almost forever in residential use.
