## Customer Reviews

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Whannell's interpretation is a stroke of genius
*by S***X on 25 August 2024*

The 4K UHD set from Universal is pretty good; the native 4K picture is terrific, being perfectly detailed, well coloured with a strong black level, while the Dolby Atmos track is suitably creepy with good effects and deep bass.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Unexpectedly good film 👍👍👍👍👍

Do you remember watching David McCallum in the 1975 TV series The Invisible Man, or Kevin Bacon in The Hollow Man. These versions of H.G.Wells tale had their own appeal and used the story in interesting and often inspiring ways.As we began to embark on Director Leigh Whannell's 2020 The Invisible Man, my partner asked me if I knew what the film was about, if it was going to be supernatural or not? I deflected by saying that I didn't think that it was at all supernatural and that I didn't really have a clue what was going to happen. I'm very glad that's what I said, because what unfolded was not only a surprise, but also in at least one case, a complete shock to me.The movie begins with Cecilia played by Elizabeth Moss, attempting to escape from her abusive partner. She manages to get away with the help of her sister, played by Harriet Dyer, and holds up in a friend and his Daughter's house. Cecilias friend just happeneds to be a police detective. What follows is an inventive and genuinely tense movie, based, somewhat loosely on Wells original premise. This version takes the tried and tested tale of a man who becomes invisible by using science, to a new and more terrifying level. It does run a bit hard and fast over certain aspects of policing procedures. But I think we can forgive it when it does. It's not like this doesn't happen all the time in the world of fiction.

A new movie take on the classic horror film monster the Invisible Man. As usual with all these, it has nothing to do with the HG Wells novel beyond the central idea of a man being invisible. It's a complete and self contained movie, not part of any trilogy or franchise or the like.Cecilia [Elisabeth Moss] is living with her wealthy genius optical scientist partner. The latter is also abusive and controlling. She manages to get away. She is advised that he has taken his own life. It looks as if she is finally free and can take back control of hers. But then little things start to get her increasingly paranoid, and make her think he's not dead after all. And is somehow watching her. People think she's crazy. But then it just gets worse and worse...This may not be an original concept. But it is a wholly original take on things. And it is good to see such originality in a movie. It goes it's own way with the central idea. But uses it to touch on present day issues such as domestic abuse, and online stalking. It shows the effect this has on the victims. It shows what happens to people who manage to break free of it.It also manages to be very very scary. If you've ever wondered if you left something in the same place as where it currently is, or where a missing object went, then this will really tap into those feelings for you.It is a very well structured script, doing things at just the right point in the story to keep it moving and take it up to the next level.Elisabeth Moss is superb in the lead. Showing great versatility. She played an abused woman in the Handmaid's tale, the Kitchen, and now this, and made all of them very different characters. It just falls short of five stars, though. Because it's just a little bit overlong. It is one of those films where I was sitting there for the last quarter thinking 'does this know how it wants to end?'. It does. It eventually turns out. But it could have gotten there a little quicker.Just a bit tighter pacing, and this would have been even better. Still a very good film indeed though, and well worth a look. The disc has the following language and subtitle options:Languages: English, French, German, Hindi, Turkish. English audio captioned.Subtitles; English, Arabic, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Hindi, Icelandic, Norwegian,. Swedish, Turkish. This dvd goes into the main menu when loaded, after getting past the Universal logo, with no trailers or ads.It is one of those dvds with icons on the main screen. But in change to usual, the extras are on the right side of it.Deleted scenes: nine of those. Watch individually or in a row. Thirteen mins in total for the latter. Seven of these are very inconsequential, but a couple are good. Although don't do anything different to other scenes from the movie.Moss Manifested. Three mins of Elisabeth Moss talking about the project and her work on it. Worth it for some good behind the scenes footage.Directors journey. Ten minutes of a video diary from the director on various days of the shoot. Also some interesting behind the scenes stuff. The players. Six minutes of people talking about the characters. Not that involving.Timeless terror. Three mins about comparing this to the 1933 version. Quite interesting.Director's commentary on the film as well.
