St. Joseph New Catholic Bible (Giant Type) Hardcover – January 1, 2019

I'm very happy with this purchase! It's a good size Bible with nice large print and bold headlines making it easy to find the chapter and verse you want. Nice traditional Catholic translation and the pages are thick enough that the text from the next page does not show up on the page you are reading. Also the binding is loose enough so that you can lay the Bible flat on a table and it stays open so you don't have to grip it in your hands while reading. This is definitely my favorite Bible I've ever owned and a great value for the money! Be sure to get a real Bible for your home, it's just not the same reading it on an electronic screen. Peace!

I recently acquired a copy of the St. Joseph Edition of the New Catholic Bible (NCB), which I received last week. I want to share my first impressions of what I consider a remarkable Bible.The New Catholic Bible is exactly what its title says: an all-new Roman Catholic translation of the Bible into English. I like this Bible very much. Here are my initial impressions of it, after reading and studying from it for a week:1. THE PHYSICAL VOLUME: The NCB is manufactured by Catholic Book Publishing Corporation of New Jersey. (It was printed in China.) It’s a large and heavy hardcover edition measuring approximately 9¼” x 6½ x 2¼,” and weighing about 4.5 pounds. It’s a very nicely constructed and quite attractive volume. The dark red cloth-over-board cover is firmly attached to the Smyth sewn text block. The paper is thin but opaque; I see little ghosting evident. The Bible text’s 14-point typeset definitely lives up to the label “giant print.” It’s very easy to read. The typeset for the notes is much smaller, but I have no difficulty reading it.2. THE TRANSLATION: The NCB is an all-new translation into English, prepared by a committee of translators under the leadership of Rev. Jude Winkler, OFM Conv. It is officially approved for private study and devotion in the Philippines, but not yet here in the United States. The translators claim that this is a formal equivalence (word-for-word) translation. It does appear to me to be very accurate. The language is clear, easily understandable, dignified, and reverent. I think it compares well with other formal-equivalence translations.3. THE NOTES: Catholic Bibles usually come with copious explanatory notes and annotations, and the NCB is no exception. The notes in the NCB are certainly a vast improvement over any other Catholic Bible I have ever used. They clearly explain the meaning of Bible passages, and do not call into question the veracity of the Bible, as some translations (like the NABRE) tend to do. The notes for each book are placed at the end of the book they cover, a placement that has both strengths and weaknesses.On balance, I really like the New Catholic Bible. It’s by far the best Catholic Bible I’ve ever used, and while it will likely never become my “daily driver,” I can recommend it without reservation.

I’m not a Bible scholar by any means so I can’t comment on the translation or format so I hope others will address that aspect. However, I am a senior citizen with failing eyesight not correctable with glasses and I can read the words easily. The font type and size are both excellent. The paper is thin but needs to be thin to decrease the weight of the Bible itself. It is not transparent so words do not show through. There is a section inside for family history so it would be a nice heirloom. It came in a very heavy cardboard gift box inside a heavy Amazon box so there was no damage to the cover or corners. It would be lovely as gift.

Large print, language is very easy to read and very well made.Very pleased with the purchase.Hope to enjoy it for many years to come.

Nice large print that I can actually read. I love this Bible! Very happy ;with it. Lovely box that it came in. So glad that I got one that truly does have large print in it this time. I would buy it again, if I lost this one. Hope I never lose this one. Again, I love it! Beautiful!
