SOOOO much better than littermaid and worth every penny
If you are looking for an affordable, low maintenance litter box look no further. About a year ago I purchased the littermaid for multi cat households (we have 2 cats). About a month after a friend was moving and gave me a scoopfree. The difference in upkeep is unbelievable. After a year of using both I decided to purchase another scoopfree and retire the littermaid. I agonized over which to buy in the first place, so if you are like me (indecisive) let me break it down for you: 1. The scoopfree uses crystal litter which seriously helps with odor control. The littermaid depends on what kind of litter you use, but I've only used high quality litter and could still smell the ammonia. 2. The scoopfree is legit scoop free. You simply take the box out of the bottom and toss it. Seriously, its that easy. It takes 30 seconds to have a completely clean, fresh box. (Even my husband can manage it) 3. I have noticed that the crystal litter seems to track less than traditional clumping litter. My house is all tile so its super noticeable if any of the litter has migrated. 4. Clumps of waste always stuck to the rake on the littermaid. Because the scoopfree uses crystal litter, this isn't an issue. 5. The waste bin on the littermaid was very small. It needed to be changed every couple of days. If your home has more than 2 cats, I would imagine it would need to be emptied at least daily. IMO that defeats the point of having an automatic litter box. I only have to change the scoopfree maybe once a month. 6. The scoopfree is much quieter. If your litter boxes are near your bedroom or where you watch TV this is a huge bonus. 7. If the power goes out and comes back on, the scoopfree will turn back on automatically. The littermaid has to be manually turned on again. This may not seem like much but you will sure notice if the power goes out while you are at work and don't realize it needs to be turned back on. 8. Crystal litter is available in white, so if you want to be able to evaluate the color of your cat's waste, this is an option. Cons: The crystal litter is a bit more expensive so the upkeep is a bit more costly. For me, its totally worth it (full time work + full time school) My cats don't mind the crystal litter but I have heard that some cats may not take well to it. Before investing in a scoopfree, it may be worth it to buy a small bag of crystal litter to test out first. If you integrate it into their current litter and switch them over in increments it shouldn't be an issue. I know this review was super long, but I hope it was helpful. This litter box is seriously worth every cent!!

Cat owner's best friend
Bought this as a replacement for our original Ultra unit that died when it got wet from the motor portion flooding in 2014. Didn't need a new hood so saved $20 getting this one. Liked the counter on the original but we can live without it. It is still going strong after 4 years of constant use of two cats. One goes in just because she like to kick up litter, so the rake seems to be constantly moving. Here's the original post from the first unit we got back in 2011: ------------------------------------------------------------ UPDATE 2018 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ It has been 7 years since we purchased our first unit. We got three years from it then it died in 2014 when motor portion got flooded with water. I replaced it with a regular unit no hood and no counter to save $20. It has been going strong for four years too. We bought a second unit when we went to Europe for two weeks to give my Mom no reason to clean a box. When we got back we packed one away because we only have one plastic tray and I won't pay for the disposable one. But I just saw the Petsafe permanent tray! I'll be purchasing one soon and putting both into service one for each cat and I hope that makes them happier! Original post 2011 I am a dog person mostly because I like a family member who bathrooms more agreeably with the rest of the family. I am also pretty much a skeptic with hopeful tendencies now and then... sometimes. Since allowing my son to rescue a cat from shelter life (classic story of dumb human expecting cat to stop scheming to get at the caged bird and "just get along") six years ago, then adding her "sister" a stray kitten comic who wandered into the yard a year later, the litter box has been one of the sorest points of our relationship. It even trumps homework sometimes. Most times. I have a super sensitive smeller and HATE the smell of cat poop, cat urine, wet cat litter or that nasty get-into-fabrics cat/poop/urine/litter stench. You know the one that announces from across the street that a "cat person" is approaching. We have thankfully not come to that point. Honestly I would have to find new human parents if it did. Sorry ASPCA. I just can't stand that smell and I am NOT going to be a cat-slave when my son "forgets" his duties. So we were planning vacation time and the boarding of the cats for 8 days would be $500 added to the cost of the trip. No one likes to clean cat litter in our family so they don't have cats, so I am reluctant to ask family or even friends to do us the favor. Then I had the brilliant idea to get this auto cleaner. I had the thought before but the price and the idea that it was a scam to get my money was there all the time. However I spent a good 3 hours researching online and amazon read the reviews and decided on the Ultra ScoopFree. It was $147. Even with the auto feeder Large Automatic Pet Feeder Electronic Programmable Portion Control Dog Cat Feeder w/ LCD display , rechargeable batteries Sanyo SEC-N16SETEVP NEW eneloop 1500 Super Power Pack with 12 AA, 4 AAA, 2 C and D Spacers, 4 Position Charger and Storage Case , the water pump Drinkwell Big-Dog Pet Fountain and 1 day shipping(see my comments on these too) it was $340. $160 for more vacation extras! Well not quite I splurged for the tiny iams indoor cat food IAMS Indoor Weight Control Hairball Care Proactive Health Dry Cat Food, 4-Pound Bags (Pack of 5) and a new cat jungle Armarkat B6802 68-Inch Cat Tree, Ivory too... so all together it was more than $500 but everything would be ours to keep and use for daily living not $500 flying just out the window. I set it all up and it was cat haven of the 21st century! All my friend had to do was come over every couple of days to make sure the kitties were still alive and that the gadgets were doing their job! No fuss, no muss, no touching anything. Hopefully. It went PUUUURRRRRFECTLY!!! (sorry couldn't resist) I only gave it 4 stars because the jury is still out and i think that the scoopfree company should make a better price on a more complete package. I think the ULTRA should be more than a cover and a counter. It should include the mat and the teflon rake. I noticed the poop sticking to the included rake even at 20 minute waiting, so not a good thing. Also the little crystals hurt when you step on them. Near the box there are quite a few of them and at night I felt like i was walking on a gravel track to get to the bathroom. My son will have to invest in a dust buster which he was suppose to do for the other litter anyway. I also understand that they want to do what the printer companies do and get you on the refills but that is just greedy not to mention unattractive to the environmentally conscious pet family. Make a plastic tray that is standard. Package the crystals in nice 12 paks at a good price with amazon prime shipping and i'll buy them for the life of these cats. Well I will keep folks posted over the next 90 days and beyond. Thank you to all the other honest reviewers who helped us make our choice. Cat mess is a part of cat family members, but we can try to make the situation better for all. Thank you to the Scoopfree folks for their invention. Now if they can only make something that gets that homework mess on the desk cleaned up.... ********************************* UPDATE **************************************************** Well it's now been nearly 5 months and there have been a few hiccups but i upgraded the review to 5 stars because I can't imagine how we lived with the manual cleaning box! The only thing is how horrible the stuff smells when you do open it up and clean it out, i advise doing that outside. Also the spot that receives the most liquid will get stained but no one's going to see it but you when you've cleaning out the box!. The rake does get dirty and stuff sticks to it so i'm ordering the teflon coated one and see how that goes. Over all i am so happy with the investment. The only thing is the cost of the crystals. It just seems to be so expensive for such a tiny amount. It's as if they are charging you for the fact that you don't have to change it as often or something. The crystals are made of silica which is refined sand right? So how is that so much more expensive than the other litter? Thinking of where we can place another one to minimize the chance of smells even more. Right now the smell is slight when you get close to day 15 or so with two cats.

STILL Really pleased with this box!
We had a first-generation Littermaid that bit the dust after about 5 years. We tried the traditional box with regular and clumping litter but with 2 cats, we were changing the regular litter every 2 days and one of our cats had become very particular -- let's just say she was showing us her displeasure if the litter wasn't clean enough for her liking more often than every 2 days. I was going to buy a new-generation Littermaid but after reading the customer reviews, I decided to try the Scoop-Free instead. We've had the box for 2 weeks now and I'm very happy so far. The biggest advantage the Scoop Free has over the Littermaid is it's unique waste catching process -- combining the rake with the urine-absorbing crystals, which results in overall less solid waste and thus less cartridge changing. With the Littermaid, between our two cats (one very old and one very big) we were having to change the cartridge every 2 days anyway and everyone knows what happens with the Littermaid when you forget to change it on time. The Littermaid also resulted in a lot more spillage and tracking of litter around the box, and there has been very, very little tracking with the Scoop Free -- in fact, I didn't buy the hood and even with it open, the odor control and tracking control has been far superior to the Littermaid. I will say that the refill catridges are a little pricy, but I'm certain overtime the price will come down and in the meantime if I do some savvy shopping I can keep it under control. Once I figured in the cost of the Littermaid cartridges and the scooping litter I had to add to the Littermaid, the cost ratio was more or less comparable between the SF and the LM anyway. The product is very easy to install, change and clean and comes with clear, concise directions and a 90-day moneyback guarantee from the manufacturer should you not be absolutely delighted -- I've got original packaging and the receipt in the garage just in case, but at this point, I don't see us sending it back. The instructions do say that if you have multiple cats and/or older cats, you will have to change the cartridges more often (every 10-15 days versus 30 for your average-sized, average-aged single cat) and my initial experiment with the box with my 2 cats shows I'm going to need to change it every 10 days ... but I have one very old cat who drinks a lot of water and one very large cat (30 lbs ... ) which is more like having two cats, so it makes sense. (After about Day 10 I started to notice a faint odor of urine as I walked past the box as the crystals reached "absorption max" ... up until that point, odor control was phenomenal!) So it will cost me about $45 a month in cartridges. I changed it today and as advertised, never had to see the solid waste, changed quickly, wiped down the case with an antibacterial wipe and I was back in business. Best of all, our "picky" cat loves the new box and has not soiled anywhere but in the Scoop Free box since we installed it. This in and of itself made it worth its weight in gold to us -- cat uses the box, box only requires maintenance every 10 days. With two busy schedules and young children to care for, it's nice to not have to devote the extra time to tending the litter. Strongly recommended! UPDATE: May 2007 -- we still like this box a lot, but if you have pets who like to wet the box in a certain spot, be sure to follow the manufacturer's guidelines to rake/stir the litter frequently; if you do not, and your cat prefers a certain spot, the crystals in that spot will cease to absorb properly and the box will leak through in that spot. Still, even with this issue (which is unique to cats that have a preferred spot) the odor control and ease of use of this box has been great overall. AND ANOTHER UPDATE, JAN 08: We still REALLY like this box. We order the 6-pk refills from Amazon using our free 2-day Prime shipping and find they are very competitively priced if we do so. We go through 2 refills a month with our 24-lb cat (our 19-yr-old cat passed away over the summer) which would work out to two avg sized cats I think. We did end up buying and using both the privacy hood and the litter tracking mat to keep down on the tracking. Box is easy to clean and keeps your hands clean, as promised. Almost a year later, we're still enthusiastic about this ... a great value for the price.

Neat Product!
This is a cool little product. It not only helps with not having to scoop your cat's poop every single day, but also keeps your house a little more sanitary because the cat doesn't need to paw through his/her own crap or other cat's crap to find a "clean" or "empty" spot to go on. The litter box does not scoop urine as urine doesn't clump with crystals, so if your cat loves to go in one spot, you will need to sift the crystals to spread the urine absorbed crystals around so it does not soak on one spot (bad for cardboard cartridges because it will eventually seep through the cardboard to your floor! I would highly recommend getting the forever litter tray with forever flaps!) You will need to scoop the poop from the compartment though, so it does not stink up the room. The crystals and cover do help the smell but does not prevent it! But it does take a lot of work out of scooping the litter! You can leave the litter box and maybe sift it every other day to avoid overly wet spots. Probably scoop out the poop every 3 or more days (so it doesn't fill up), but it really depends on how often you feed them. I have 2 cats that have scheduled feedings twice a day with water available all hours of the day. You can get away with not changing the litter but every 3 to 4 weeks for one cat, but for my two cats I need to change it every 1 1/2 to 2 weeks. When they say the cartridges last a whole month.. that is really optimized. Of course experiences are different for everyone and their cats! This product is not going to save you money in the long run, but it will save you a great deal of time and effort! Which they say.. time is money, and so far I have not had any trouble with it! (knock on wood, lol!) I would recommend one for up to 3 cats but it's really pushing it! Any more than two for me and I would be buying more litter boxes, but I do recommend this product to anyone looking to be lazy on scooping ;) One thing I have seen a lot of different views on is how to get your cat use to the litterbox. All kitties are different, but here is how I did mine (others may have different outcomes). First I set up my scoopfree litter box and let my kitties look at it. They came close but wanted nothing to do with getting in it (one of my cats did get in and pee, but that was before he realized it moved and made noise, lol!). So I did what was recommended and put a normal clay litter box next to the scoopfree and let it get filled up with excrement. I also did the thing where they recommend you put a little clay litter sprinkled in the scoopfree and a few scoopfree crystals in the regular litterbox. Kitties still didn't want to go for the scoopfree :( So after day 2 (haha I'm impatient!) I basically left the old clay litterbox in the room (with everything good and bad still in it) but I turned it so the opening was against the wall (it was placed behind the scoopfree) and they couldn't get in but could smell it! Poor kitties.. Then I took some regular cat food (pretend they are treats) and set them on the walls of the litterbox (it was clean) so they would get that the scoopfree wasn't going to hurt them. I also praised them and acted like it wasn't a big deal about the scoopfree. They seemed to be more comfortable ^_^ but sure enough, I go to work after I did this and when I get home, they were using it! Yay! Smart kitties! Anyways, that's what worked for me and it worked FAST and with less bad smell (waiting till your clay litterbox fills up so they won't want to use it anymore? GROSS!). I also left the hood off the litterbox for a whole week! Also, a word on kitty litter below! I have been experimenting with two crystal cat litters so far. One is the Fresh Step Crystal Cat Litter (available at Walmart for about $14.50 per 8 lb bag) and the other is Mimi's Crystal Cat Litter (available at Walmart for about $4.50 per 4 lb bag). The Fresh Step litter (for my TWO cats) lasts between 1 1/2 weeks to 2 weeks, while the Mimi's Litter lasts between 1 week to 1 1/2 weeks. This would last longer for one cat and shorter for 3 or more. I believe it would last a month for a single cat, but it depends on whether you sift it so wet spots don't set and how clean you like the litter box to look/smell. I know I could make it last longer but that would be gross :P Fresh Step holds the smell a lot better and lasts longer, but for a months supply of Fresh Step (around $29~$43.50) a months supply of Mimi's is only going to cost you around $13.50~$18.00.. So Mimi's is a way better deal. One other thing. Mimi's does seem to get dirtier fast, but I believe it may be because you can see the urine much better in Mimi's so it looks less clean faster (Fresh Step is mostly blue crystals while Mimi's is mostly white).. I haven't tried any other brands of cat litter so sorry I can't help you on that! ------------------------------------------------------ Edit: (09/29/14) Hello there! I wanted to add to this since my first review was 08/2012, and I wanted to give an update! Still using the mimi's crystals (I would recommend ordering them from walmart.com if you can't find them where you live since they will deliver it to their store for free!) I would greatly recommend using mimi's as it does a great job at removing moisture and scents from the excrement and urine. Over the past few years, my cats still prefer the regular litter boxes to this one. If you would use this by itself, they WILL use it. I have 2 other plain litterboxes and this automatic one. They use the regular boxes almost exclusively, but they still use this one from time to time (as one of my stinky felines realized that it does cover up the scent of his crap better..) The box still works just like it did when I bought it and I can leave it for months at a time without changing the litter (even if they don't use it as often, it still has stuff in it) If I would use it exclusively, yes, they would use it, and yes it would be a big money saver! But for the way I use it, it doesn't cause much of a change >_< It does help the room stink a lot less though, and I do really like it. It does not fail me, I more failed it because I have multiple cats (when you have 1 cat, use 1 to 2 litter boxes, for 2 cats, use 2 + 1, ect) The reason I get more than 1 litter box is because 1 of my cats has special needs, and needs to use more than 1 litter box or he gets bladder problems for some reason (go figure), so it's his fault! lol If I bought 2 more of these, they would take a bit to make up for their price xD but overall, exclusive use to just the automatic litter box will save you time on dumping litter, save you money on litter (Mimi's litter for me!! http://www.walmart.com/ip/Mimi-Litter-Cat-Litter-4-lb-Cats/12018928 ), and will help keep odors down!! The forever litter tray, which I wholly recommend, is still going strong as well!

Purrrrfect!!
Before purchasing the Scoopfree, I did my research on the ratings of Scoopfree compared to those of other automatic litterboxes. I am SO glad I went with the Scoopfree! There is a reason it is rated better than the others overall! I have 4 cats in my home. I purchased the Scoopfree because I also have a little dog who has coprophagia (likes to eat poop! Gross!). Since I work a lot and am unable to watch the dog every second of every day, I decided to purchase the Scoopfree. It works like an absolute dream. I literally have not had ANY problems with it, and I've had it for about 3 months now. I love the timer. I love not having to scoop after every poop. I love coming home to a great-smelling house! My dog doesn't have a chance to eat poop because it's gone in 5 minutes! The motor is very quiet. I'm a light sleeper, and I've fallen asleep right next to it. The motor runs and it doesn't wake me up. The only rare issue I have it poop sticking to the grate, but it happens so rarely, and it usually is because the kitties have pushed the litter around so much that the poop doesn't get coated with it appropriately. Cleaning it is very simple. The only thing I didn't really anticipate was the price of the spare pans! Yes, you can throw out the old litter and put new litter in (which saves you having to get a new pan), but after about 2 weeks, the edges of the inside bottom start to come up, trapping old litter underneath. Not a huge deal, but worth knowing. I also tried to cover the pan with a trash bag and then fill it, hoping that would prolong the life of the pan, and the grate caught the plastic bag and started to jam! Luckily I didn't damage it though--just wouldn't advise trying it. The grate goes down low into the pan for optimal scooping, so having a bag there doesn't work. Also, some pet stores claim the Scoopfree litter pans are no longer being sold due to copyright infringement, but I'm still able to find them at other pet stores. Don't let that sway you, as you can get pans online too (even for cheap here at Amazon!) I only had one cat hesitant to use it at first. She wouldn't go near the box for about a week, but she slowly got used to it and now uses it religiously with no problem. All in all, this is a WONDERFUL product that performs exactly the way it promises as long as you don't have unrealistic expectations or do anything to mess it up (and sometimes the kitties may throw it off by piling up litter so it blocks the sensor--again, not the machine's fault). I don't even see what the fuss is about in these negative reviews because I'm just that happy with it. GET THIS ONE!!!

Seriously disappointed...
Maybe I'm just doing something wrong, but honestly, I can't understand all the rave reviews. I have a 4-month-old kitten and I am well aware that kittens will use up litter much faster than adult cats, but we're still talking ONE CAT and I am only on day 5 of a fresh cartridge and the smell is already so intolerable that I can't be within 5 feet of the box without retching. It literally smells like someone peed in a leather boot filled with oatmeal and then microwaved it for 15 minutes. Anyone that says they manage with one cartridge for 30 days is either a liar, criminally insane or lost their sense of smell in some freak, manure-huffing accident. To contrast, I had no odor problems with the scooping litter I was originally using (I'm talking a post-poopfest, pre-scoop, completely-thrashed litter box too). Also, even with the hood and the carpet (yes - I'm the sucker that bought all the accessories), the crystals get EVERYWHERE. Then there's the price of the refills. $51.99 for three, or $99.99 for six. The audacity to charge over 15 dollars for a piece of cardboard and a pound of litter is breathtakingly criminal, and that's even if they lasted as long as the company advertises. I bought a 3-pack of litter cartridges. With these, along with the one that comes with the box, I thought I would be set for 4 months of scoop-free bliss... how sorely mistaken I was. I am already on the third cartridge and I'm already about to toss it and pop in the last one. On to the rake system: I will admit that it's a rather ingenious design and I'm sure it's a vast improvement over other automatic liter boxes (I really wouldn't know), but I still think those boys from MIT need to go back to the drawing board. Maybe my threshold for noise is different than others, but I find this box intolerably loud and annoying. The raking itself is loud, but then at the mid point of its direction change, the rake pivots and falls to the other side making a very loud clunking noise. This, of course, is endlessly fascinating for a kitten and he will promptly investigate the noise and end up going inside the box again, setting off the infrared mechanism, ensuring that the cleaning cycle will happen 20 minutes later. I can't really fault the manufacturer for a kitten's curiosity, but I do believe it's something kitten owners should be aware of. In addition to the noise, the rake spacing is still rather wide which will invariably lead to cat poop getting behind, and thusly out of the reach of, the rake system. Sorry, but I never had to scrape crap out of my old litter box with a butter knife. Just let that imagery float around in your head for a couple minutes. I haven't had any problems with urine leaking through the bottom of the trays, but then again, I haven't had a tray in the box for more than a week. However, I did notice that the corners to the tops of every box were broken at the seams; though I don't know if this is from how they were shipped, or a manufacturing defect. Anyway, long story short: I'm switching back to the old box once I use the last refill cartridge... so that should be in about 6 days. Edit (1/27/08): After browsing around for a solution to the smell, I tried one of the suggestions which is to mix the litter around manually and that definitely seemed to help, though ScoopFree recommends you just leave the box alone and let it do its thing (that's what I had been doing). Someone else recommended using a small amount of baking soda on the bottom of the tray before pouring in the crystals. I'll give that a shot on the next cartridge. Anyway, taking 15 seconds out of your day to mix around the crystals isn't a big deal and if I can squeeze at least 2 weeks of use out of the cartridge, I'll definitely bump up the rating.

Does not work after less than a month of use by one cat
SUMMARY -Unit malfunctioned and rake would not move after less than a month of use -Amazon replaced the unit, new unit is working great -Trays do not last nearly as long as advertised, I would say maybe two weeks tops for a single cat. Even if you scoop out the poos, the crystals get stinky and sludgy from cat pee. Stinks way worse than a regular box -I bought a Forever reusable tray because my cat loves this litter box -Honestly despite all the drama I would probably buy it again. I like that my cat gets a relatively fresh slate each time he goes to use the box. This unit reduces the amount of time that I spend on the litter box per day BUT still requires a lot of maintenancing I have one cat and l started getting bad about scooping the litter box every day. We bought this litter box and from the jump ordered the 3 pack of refills so that we could give the litter box a fair chance. Our cat had no interest in the litter box at first, so we kept the old one around and moved the ScoopFree to a different spot. That did the trick and it soon became the preferred litter box for poos. Honestly for one cat the litter should really be changed at 20 days. These trays do NOT last long. My cat pees in his old litter box and seems to prefer the ScoopFree for poo but still we are at less than 30 days right now and the current tray stinks so bad I didn't think I could wait until next week to change it (it is due to be changed on the 19th). Considering that right now the refills cost $15 each, this gets expensive fast. The only way to avoid this is to buy a permanent tray at $50 and buy the crystal litter separately (just bought a bag at target for $15 and it easily has three times the amount that one tray has). Buying the reusable tray would put me at around $200 for this whole thing so at this point I am starting to get pissed off. But whatever, it is what is best for my cat so that every time he goes to take a poo it is nice and fresh for him, so I accept I will be buying that next when I get my next paycheck and move on. Today I go to check on the box and it is all jacked up. The purple top is up and the rake is stuck. I spend the next 2 hours troubleshooting. Take the whole thing apart, throw the litter out and clean everything up before I begin. Mess with the hood and hit the button, nothing happens. Wipe everything down, check the sensors, nothing happens. When I hit the button I hear a small sound, but the rake does not budge. The light blinks once and that is it. Wash my hands, get out the computer. Nothing on google, nothing on the PetSafe site. The only troubleshooting option they offer online for this litter box is "I just set up ScoopFree Ultra and the rake only moves a few inches before stopping." There is nothing in the troubleshooting manual about this either. I emailed their support team and the only reason I am giving two stars is in the hope that I will hear back from them soon about what the problem might be. After I emailed them though, I just wanted to return the whole thing. I am just really bothered how it has been less than a month since I set this thing up and already I am having problems. For $150, no thanks. Turns out it isn't even possible to return the trays even though we have not opened or used them yet. Because of that we are already out $50. Thinking about how it is already broken, how I spent the last two hours going through the above and then setting up a backup litter box, and thinking about how expensive this system is to maintain... I am over it. Depending on the response from the support team and how I feel in the morning maybe we will keep it. My cat seems to really like it. And I like the blue crystals since it is so much less dusty. But I don't know at this point, man I just want to pack it up and get it out of my face. Update 12/17. The next day after writing the above review, my cat cried in front of the door to the room where the automatic litter box was previously kept. This dude is so spoiled. He guilted me. He did not poop for an entire day despite having two completely clean litter boxes. I went to return and on the return page I had the option for Amazon to send me a replacement litter box and then I have 30 days to return the broken one. So we are going to give this another shot. I will update the review after receiving and testing out the replacement. By the way, for anyone else having the problem I had where the rake gets stuck at the end, this is what was recommended by customer support. Didn't work for me but maybe it will work for you: "Sometimes standing the unit on end can re-set the motor. Please try the following and see if this returns the ScoopFree to normal working conditions: • Remove the purple waste trap cover and prop the ScoopFree on its end (the same end as the indicator light) so it’s standing vertically. • Unplug the unit and then plug back in. Test to see if the rake completes a full cycle. • Replace the ScoopFree back onto the ScoopFree tray until you hear the click. Unplug and plug back in to see if it rakes normally. • Make sure waste trap lid is properly installed. • Ensure litter box is seated properly on litter tray and level." Update 1/18. The replacement kitter is working but these trays do not last long at all. I got about 10 days out of a tray before I couldnt stand the urine smell any more. I tried to help make it last by scooping the poos out every other day or so from the trap, but the sludge started at the bottom of the tray. I got worried it was going to leak through the box and on to the floor so I changed it today and ordered the "forever" reusable tray. I am really unimpressed with this product, but my cat loves this litter box. He will not use his other regular litter box now and comes running to this one whenever I am checking on it. For him I am going to keep trying to make this work, I am crazy and he is spoiled. I am changing my review from 2 stars to 3 since he loves it so much.

Excellent Product
We purchased this box for a finicky cat that we suspected refused to use the box if it wasn't clean. Unfortunately, that wasn't the problem and this box didn't correct his behavior issue - however our other female loves it and so do I. It is very quiet - you can hear it, but it is not obnoxious. My female was 7 years old and had no problem making an immediate adjustment. In fact, she's fascinated and waits to watch the box in operation after she uses it. I empty it every 30 days (she's a small cat). The box stays very clean, the rake stays clean. I've used the box for over 6 month now and have not had one poop clump on the rake like the Littermaid we owned (and discarded) previously. The refills are expensive, but the convenience and cleanliness is just worth it to me. We NEVER smell this box. We travel frequently and I don't have to worry about the cat being on her own, even for several days at a time. Tips: The cardboard boxes can leak, especially if your cat likes to use one corner of the box like mine. I keep the whole set up on a water proof door mat. I also use the cardboard that comes in the refill cartridges in the bottom of the container top (it has to have about and inch or 2 trimmed to fit), then place the bottom box inside on the cardboard, and I put a piece of wax paper in the bottom of the box directly under the crystals. My cat tends to make a pile of crystals in her favorite corner. This is a large pile (every crystal in the box) and it tricks the sensor by making it think the cat is in the box. I have to shake it or rake it to redistribut the crystals, then the box works fine. You can tell if it's "hung up" by rapid blinking of the sensor light. You can also manually initiate the rake, but it won't redistribute equally across the box. My cat also pushes some crystals out of the box, and with the crystals that get swept into the poop containment center, we run low on crystals by the mid-end of the month. I mark the top of the box where the crystals are when the new cartridge is installed - like a fill line, then add crystals as needed to keep this amount. This also cuts down on leaking (when I remember to do it regularly), and probably is responsible for zero odor. I have two toddlers, and a lot going on - I don't like to fuss over a litter box regularly, and this is perfect. I spend about 20 minutes a month on it - total. That includes vacuuming around the box, wiping it down with disinfecting wipes (all that is needed), setting up the new cartridge and disposing of the old, and the occasionally shake and top off during the month. Each cat has it's different quirks - so making it work "perfectly" for your family may take a couple tries to figure out. Overall, use is simple.

Good but can do better
Product work great but comes with a coardborad tray. If you want a decent plastic tray you need to buy it zxtra for 14k. At thisbstage it is a bit of a rip off for small budget.

So happy no more litter clean up!
My daughter has been trying to talk me into buying a self clean litter box since she purchased one and I always said I didn’t need one. I finally caved and now wish I would have purchased months ago. There is no matter cat box smell in my house and I don’t have to deal with cleaning a litter box which in itself is time consuming, messy and well stinky. I have no more litter to sweep up regularly and the self clean is quiet, easy and super sufficient. The refills are a bit pricey but definitely worth the cost so my litter box is pretty much maintenance free. Highly recommend for every cat owner

Excelente

It works.
So far it is working as advertised. It is a more expensive way of dealing with litter but because of my age and with covid making things difficult, it is worth it. Also no litter smell. I was concerned my cat would not like the change but she seems not to be upset with it. So a good product..

Fantastic, clean and odourless - but trays only last 8-9 days.
This really does do what it says on the tin. No smell, no scooping and the raking mechanism is really quiet when compared to the Littermaid trays I've been using for the last ten years. When the time comes to replace the tray you don't even have to see any of the waste as it remains covered at all times. This brings me to the only downside - our cat is 18 years old and his kidneys don't work too well. He drinks like a fish and pees like Austin Powers. Consequently the trays only last 8-9 days tops. When they reach the end of their life the smell is no longer contained and they must be swapped for a new one immediately! This makes it a bit more expensive to run than our previous Littermaid with "Worlds Best Cat Litter" and massively more expensive than normal litter and daily scooping. Presumably the trays would almost certainly last longer with a young healthy cat though? Bottom line is this tray really works and is maintenance and odour free for the life of the trays. If you're like me and work all day and don't want to come home to a smelly litterbox and you don't mind the expense of the refills it's a great product.
