A great way to learn dutch
I find this to be the best way to learn the Dutch language for self-study

Fiendishly over-priced
and not doing it for me. I understand the idea of concentrating on day to day activities but it's all a bit haphazard and odd. Do Dutch folk really start the day with a supermarket bought cheese sandwich?I couldn't find key conjugated verb tables - have, to be, make etc and there isn't a Dutch equivalent of the most excellent Blue Book of French Verbs. All in all, a meandering, irritating and wallet-emptying disaster.

The audio course may be free but it doesn't correlate with the text
The book is set out in a confusing way and there is no help to be had from the free audio which doesn't tie in with the text

Not worth it
A very expensive paperback on fairly cheap, low quality paper. The "audio support" is an online download, not a CD, so there is little justification for the price being charged for this.

Not for the fainthearted!
What is "linkerkant" in English (page 25)? With a bit of imagination and the word list at the end of book, you find that "linker" has something to do with "left". But for "kant" you would need a dictionary (it means "side"). But before you learn your first word of Dutch you get this information in the introduction(!): "You cannot use an object pronoun in combination with a preposition when you refer to a thing." (page XXI).Before writing a "Teach yourself a language" book, one should have tried to learn a foreign language just with a book (and some audio). The authors of this book apparently never did. Being a university lecturer for many years is not enough! If you have some beforehand knowledge of Dutch, know grammatical terms and have a Dutch dictionary, this book might help you. Otherwise it gives you a very hard time. Sad, because there aren't many introductions into this language.
