Review: Versatile Antenna! - I had a need to put up a base antenna for 10/11 meters that was smaller than a full size based antenna. I tried experimenting with several different antennas from a dipole put up as an inverted V to a several different mobile antennas. Eventually I tried this K40 BCMax antenna on a 5' mast. It worked really well but the SWR was a bit high. I added a 104" radial wire to the mounting bracket and stretched it out at a 45 degree angle. Viola! The SWR is 1:1 on channel 19 and 1.3 on channels 1 and 40. The receive capability of this antenna is better than anything else I've put up. My first call on 38LSB was answered immediately by a mobile station 15 miles away. Overall, for the price its an outstanding antenna that has exceeded my expectations! Transmission range is most dependant upon band conditions. If the band is open, 5 watts or less can transmit from New York to Tokyo, Crystal clear (layers in the ionosphere reflect the RF, and it keeps bouncing and skipping all around the planet). If the band is closed, 20,000 watts just makes a lot of un-necessary RF interference and splatter (layers in the ionosphere become transparent to 11 meter RF and it just flies off into space, or the ionosphere becomes opaque to that part of the spectrum and just absorbs the RF). Yes yes yes... there's no 100% absolutes. If the band is 99.95 closed 0.05% of 100 watts (<1 watt) might bounce off the ionosphere and give you a faint skip... So some people get excited about that, and try making systems that are 1000 watts, 10,000 watts, and even higher. It's a complete waste of time and money. **Q: Is this to heavy for a magnet mount?** A: Yes it is too heavy **Q: What is the assembled length of this antenna?
