Review: If you can, try before you buy… - I love fountain pens, always have, and I have several. I’ve been writing with them for years. Now I suspect that the Pelikan Twist was probably designed to look ‘cool’, so that it would attract youngsters who are just starting out using a fountain pen, which obviously doesn’t apply to me. However, I liked the look of it, and was particularly drawn to it because the advertising blurb said it was for both right-handed and left-handed users, and I’m left-handed. But I’m not one of those left-handers whose arm curves over the top of what they are writing so that the hand comes in form the other side, so to speak, so that they are effectively pulling the pen across the page as a right-hander would - when I write my hand remains below the line I am writing. So I dived in and got one, well aware of the fact that if I didn’t like it I wouldn’t be breaking the bank. When I ordered it I was already aware of the ‘ergonomic’ design of that part of the pen where you actually hold it. I have a number of Lamy Safari pens that use a similar system, though on those the moulding of the surface is comparatively mild - I hardly notice it is anything other than round. But on the Pelikan Twist the moulding of the grip part of the pen is quite severe - it really drives you to hold it the way designer clearly thinks you ought to hold it. But when I did what the pen was essentially telling me to do, it felt all wrong. The nib was at what was for me a very strange angle to the paper and I didn’t feel comfortable at all. When I adjusted my grip to get the nib at the angle I wanted, I found that my fingers were holding the grip section precisely where the designers obviously thought I shouldn’t be holding it - they were on the narrow ridges between the troughs where my fingers were supposed to go, which made holding the pen a bit of a balancing act. When I tried writing with my fingers in what was for me the ‘normal’ position, the pen was lovely - very smooth, good ink flow. But for the fact that the positioning made it feel as though the pen was going to jerk out of my fingers at any moment, it was perfect. When I tried writing with my fingers where the designer thinks they are supposed to be the pen still performed very well, but my writing was all over the place. In short, I couldn’t get used to how the pen tries to force you to hold it, so I gave up. My efforts made me realise that for all these years I’ve also been holding the Lamy Safaris in a manner the designers wouldn’t approve of, but I hadn’t noticed because the moulding of the grip section on those is less dramatic so it isn’t at all obvious. I’ve given the Pelikan Twist five stars because the pen is good, cheap, well constructed and writes very well, and my problems with it are probably the result of years of developing bad habits and the fact that I am left-handed. If you are a right-handed youngster just starting out with a fountain pen the Twist may well be ideal. However, if you are an ancient fountain pen user like me, or if you are left-handed, my advice would be to find a way to actually try out the pen before you buy one. It might hit the spot, but you may find it’s not for you.
Review: Nice pen good value - This pen is really comfortable to write with. Easy to use. The nib is a bit on the thicker side compared to the Parker pen I have but it’s very smooth not at all scratchy. Ink flows smoothly. I like it. Very good value.
