Brilliant game mechanics and beautiful Macross Saga sourcebook in one
Much better than the mess that is Palladium’s version, and I’m happy we have an alternative that better embodies the soap opera scifi of Robotech, and we don’t have to settle for a Battletech-esque mecha combat simulationist system (which doesn’t really capture what the source material is really about… though admittedly the one thing I miss is the line art). Can’t wait for the Homefront physical book, covering The Masters and New Generation Sagas.

Excellent Book!
I grew up a diehard Robotech fan.I loved the old Palladium Books rpg back in the day and I had been hoping for a long time for a new version to be written. This is a perfect game for people new to the franchise and old fans alike. The rules are simple for new players but not simple enough to bore older veterans of the genre. The book has so much lore about the saga and the Artwork is... Simply Magnificent! It is worth it. I am very happy with this game. Feels like a piece of my childhood has been restored with it.

Beautiful Book, Novel Mechanics for Robotech/Macross Fans
TL;DR: If you like Robotech, and want to see a novel system to bring it to life, this is for you. If you like Robotech art, this is pretty good. It also looks nice on a shelf.I love Robotech. While I never saw the original TV broadcasts, I first rented a VHS cassette with "Robotech" emblazoned on it back in the early 90s. I quickly fell in love with the idea of these remarkable transforming robots, giant alien invaders, and the battles that would unfold between them. I bought every single novel, and eventually discovered an ad in the back of my comic books for Palladium Games' RPG adaptation. So I like Robotech, that's fair to say. When I heard that Strange Machine Games picked up the license after Palladium let it expire, I was interested. The Palladium line is the point of reference, and while the mechanics of the system were a bit... unsuited, in my opinion, to a fast-paced mecha romp, it set a standard for layout in my eyes. Rules and character creation first, then stats for the "toys" - mechs, weapons, ships, etc.Art)The Strange Machine Games book is, first of all, gorgeous. Much of the art is new, and it's in full color and up to modern standards. I prefer the art style from some of the Palladium stable of artists, but essentially all of it was in grayscale or lineart, so it's a overall a wash on that front.Layout)On the positive side, the table of contents, index, and internal pointers (e.g. "find more about this rule X on page Y") are excellent, and make skipping about quicker and more productive. On the negative side, I'm not a big fan of how many vehicles and mecha have their descriptions spread over several pages. It might start at the end of one page, fill another, and end at the top of a third - if the content is important, I strongly feel the format should accommodate a single vehicle per page, even if that means leaving a bit of the next page empty (or better, filled with relevant art!). As it is, the mecha and ships run together and it makes reading it less of a pleasure that it could be for me.Mechanics/System:I've been paging through the book for a few days, and I don't think I'm anywhere near being able to play in or run a game. For better or worse, certain styles of mechanics are more intuitive than others, and I don't find this intuitive. I'm nor familiar with every RPG system out there, but to me it seems rather novel, eschewing conventional stats in favor of a more skill-heavy build system. I feel like I can pick up D&D or a Palladium game (or Savage Worlds, Fantasy AGE, Witcher TTRPG, etc.) and grasp it straight away. I'm not getting this yet, and it'll require more reading. While I'm sure I'll wrap my head around it, for those thinking the system will be ANYTHING like these mentioned, it's really not. It strikes me as very neat and potentially quick, but not familiar. So be warned, that's a good and a bad thing at the same time.Value:Well, I'm never going to play the game, and for me it's still worth it. The art is lovely, and as a Robotech fan, it feels like a solid, beautiful and well-made hardback book. While I'm not grokking the system itself yet, I'm enjoying paging through the book itself and figuring it out. While the layout isn't perfect, I've seen far worse. For a Robotech fan, it's not a must-buy, particularly if you don't want to play the game - I think you'd be as well served by one of the art books floating about.Bottom Line:If you like Robotech, and want to see a novel system to bring it to life, this is for you.

More sourcebook than RPG
The role playing system in the book is pretty marginal and is easily overlooked amongst all the stats and background info contained within the book.

Fun, easy to learn, beautiful color illustrations
First off. This is a beautifully illustrated book. Even the regular text is highlighted in wonderful color. The system is super simple to learn. Just d6s. The only thing I recommend is buying blank dice so successes are easy to count.

The underlying system is very poor
The underlying system is very rudimentary and poorly designed. This is focused on being a background detail book that is also incorrect on nearly every page. If you are seriously into Robotech and want to RPG look for Palladium instead.
