In the summer of 2013, American writer and humanitarian aid worker Ming Lauren Holden embarked on a search for Syrian refugees and their stories. She journeyed to Turkey and eventually into Syria itself, writing "dispatches" back home to her supporters in hopes of shedding light on one of the worst humanitarian crises of our time. A man calling himself "Abu Faisal", a Syrian-American responsible for bringing Holden safely in and out of Syria, weighed in with his take on the Syrian civil war, alternating with Holden's own literary nonfiction about the search for displaced Syrians and their stories. This book is a compilation of those letters home, letters that help to illuminate the human cost of an ongoing and violent regional conflict that threatens to engulf the Middle East.
