How often do you need go change the pads in this device?

I don't like the smell, so don't use the pads.

Will this stay on overnight? I need one that won't auto switch off with half a tank of water left. Thanks

It stops when the water runs out. The water lasts longer on the low setting. I haven’t tried over night yet.

This makes the surface underneath very hot? Is this normal

The base plate is supposed to heat up to evaporate the water, but I’ve found that by standing it on a flat hard surface (like a plastic tray) it allows the heat to escape as air can circulate beneath the unit. If it’s put on a carpet it will get hot.

Does it have an internal light that stays always on when the machine is on, or the light can be switched off so it's dark at night?

There is a little green light that stays on while the machine is on. As far as I know, you can't switch that light off, but it is a very small light. I normally sleep in a pitch-black room and cannot sleep with a light on, but this light is so small that it doesn't bother me and I am able to sleep when this machine is on.
