The luffa plant was destroyed so bad that it had maybe 10% of its leaves left. Today Is Aug 3rd and the new photo shows the recovery. It is massive and unsure really as to how many plants survived the hail.(started with 8) Time will tell if it bares fruit. We have been giving it a lot of water and fertilizing it quite a bit. I planted 5 seeds in July and they all sprouted! I harvested 5 luffa already and there are at least 10 more on the vines. **Q: Are these flowers self pollinating?** A: There are boy flowers and girl flowers. They both will grow on the vine. Moths come at night and bees come during the day. They pollinate the female flowers. Ants will come and chew off the male flowers. No worries. It will save you from getting rid of them. The female flowers will produce the fruit (Luffa). **Q: Would this grow in a large planter pot?** A: The vine needs to stay off the ground. The luffa gourds need to hang, or they will rot on the ground before harvest. The vine stretches and grows and grows. You could try a large pot, but you will need something for it to climb on. We start ours as seeds. We transfer the seedlings into bigger pots and eventually into our garden. One year not all could be, and we continued to transfer to bigger pots. The vines never grew very long before it just seemed to stop growing. I only had it in a 10-inch pot.
