A 1952 Newbery Honor Book The history of the Mississippi River Valley is told in text and pictures through the adventures of Minn, a snapping turtle, as she travels downstream. Review: Great book!! - This is such a great book! I highly recommend it as a tool for teaching children about nature and geography or for children who enjoy adventure stories. The book follows Minn, a three legged snapping turtle, as she travels along the Mississippi River encountering many experiences along the way. Review: This is a wonderful author !!! Wonderful child books !!! Good parent share with kid books !!!! - Minn of the Mississippi, _a baby turtle -- as well as A Tree in the Trail - and Journey to the Sea are all wonderful books. We read them to our daughter as bedtime stories -- second or third grade (each probably a week to get through) Educational - as per critters, grography and history of the USA. How can one not enjoy learning how a small indian crafted boat (one foot long) finds its own way down to the sea on its own -- The great lakes connect - he even goes over Niagra Falls - for example

A Beautiful Natural History of the Mississippi River
Holling's "Minn of the Mississippi" should rank among Beston's "Outermost House," Leopold's "Sand County Almanac," and Douglas' "River of Grass" as among the greatest nature writing. This is not a typical children's story book but a complete history of the Mississippi River. You learn about the geology, hydrology, history, biology, and anthropology of this great river told from the point of view of a 3-legged snapping turtle as it moves down the river from headwaters to gulf. Only some unfortunate stereotyping in one chapter mars this gem. (Though at the time this book was written, no one would have noticed.) You will spend hours perusing the beautiful illustrations, maps, and diagrams. Holling's pencil drawings that decorate each chapter are just exquisite. Highly recommended.

Turtle Tales
My boys loved Minn. And to be honest, I really did, too. It is like a science lesson and a geography lesson and a small history lesson all in one book. This isnโt a sit and read all the way through in one sitting kind of book. I love the beautiful artwork and sketches. I added activities along the way and turned it into an event. We learned a lot that we didnโt know from Minn.

It is about the life journey of a snapping turtle down the mississippi river.
Minn of the Mississippi has been in print for 75 years. I read it when I was a child and it is exactly the same, in the paperback, as the hardback version that I had. It is wonderful to see this treasure of a book again. I plan to read it to my classes and pass it along.

Informative fiction about the mighty Mississippi
A little dated but that is part of it's charm. Historically accurate window into the history of the might Mississippi from it's source to the delta as told through the journey of a snapping turtle as it makes it's way to the Gulf of Mexico. Excellent book for kids of all ages and adults will enjoy it too.

For fans of Paddle to the sea: beware this is a bit darker, harder to make PC, but my almost 7 year old is enjoying it.
