We would recommend using the filter only after completely washing and rinsing the car as usual with untreated water, then just use the filter as a final rinse to wash off the water residue (so use normal water to wash off the soap etc, then the filter to wash off the little bit of residue of normal water), so that only a few liters are used from the filter unit each time. It can be quite useful to meter this by filling up a watering can with water from the unit for the final rinse, the slower the flow the better the results will be.
