Q: If used for ER only I don't want to pull it out of the drawer in a year to find it dead, if not used how long will it hold a charge?

If you go just a few days to a week you'll notice a change. Always keep a charging cord and port near by.

Q: Can I use this to read? I mean, I don't want a dazzling light.

Yes, there are 6 lighting modes, and we suggest to flood light for reading.

Q: can the LED bulb/lamp be replaced when it burns out?

I don't think so, never thought along those lines before. LED lights typically have a couple thousand hours lifespan, typical ranges are 2,000hrs to 10,000 hrs. If same is thru for this unit, I did say it will be difficult or nearly impossible to burn it out

Q: Can the red light be turned on and off without cycling through the modes?

The button for the red-red/green light is on the left side of the housing. Push once, red light, push again, red/green light, and a third push, lights off...The button on the right controls the four different white lights.
