Being aware that ESXi essentially runs in memory, I then ran ESXi from a USB thumb drive, but the boot times were slow, I also encountered a few PSOD, even after doing the recommend 'thumb drive tweaks'. So I went looking for a low capacity SSD SATA drive, and the KINGSPEC KSD-SA25.7 2.5" SATA-β…’ 2 CHANE SSD Solid State Disk (16GB) is just right, ESXi recommend >8GB. So, loaded up ESXi on it and it works great, no issues what so ever. It boots much much quicker than a USB thumb drive, and quicker than a spinning disk, however, the old hard drive was 5 years old.
