Blatant lies
The chapter on Kargil is far from reality. I happened to be there.

a great
A roller caster ride of Musharafs journey to power! His handling of the most difficult situations & decisiveness is well elaborated. Thoroughly explains Musharafs personality, his view of the world, his way of working.. To the point & concise, a great read

Gripping and brutally frank.
Quite a well written book, I must say. And indeed, never before has a leader written a more honest account of his life, his trials and tribulations, his journey which began from his childhood whole still in Office. I would say it's a must read.

'Countercoup' and not 'Coup'.
He is really forthcoming in his memoir. I don't agree with him on the topic of 'Kargil', but he managed to leave an imprint on me by his unshakeable belief in Destiny.

Frank and honest but missing the important issues...
Congratulations to President Pervez Musharraf for an interesting book. He seems to be candid, honest and succintly brief. His childhood, career and his love affairs made interesting reading. The hijacking drama was gripping too. But most of the things are conspicuous by their absence in the book. He has not talked of how feudalism has destroyed security and stunted the growth and development of Pakistan and the devastating impact the feudal system has had on the society, politics and economy of the country. While most parts read smoothe, some parts read like a progress report like the chapters Manhunt and Tightening the nooze etc. Such minute details get boring unless you are giving an account to a school teacher for evaluation. He has indeed come out very strong against terrorism. His efforts in the war on terror have been most commendable regardless of what the detractors might suggest. He saved Pakistan from slipping into oblivion. Most sensible people give him due credit for it. But one wishes that he bargained for some help from the international community in getting some Pakistan problems solved in all earnestness. What he has failed to tell the world is how Pakistan suffered at the hands of its neighbours - East and West. On the West, Pakistan has always been paying a heavy price for Afghanistan and actually suffered immeasurably both internally and externally. And because of Kashmir she suffered against India on the East. It does not come out in the book. While Pakistan did the US bidding and continues to do so, the party rewarded was India with the Nuclear deal for doing absolutely nothing on the war on terror. He has not come out with his guns blazing on this. Musharraf also did not devote any chapter on India Pakistan issues. This was an occasion when the world was reading, to come out with the suufering peoples point of view so that there was a better understanding of the positions of both parties. He ought to have emphasised how important was the "democratic solution" as put by Mr. Tony Blair to Pranab Roy on a local flight and shown on NDTV, to this important issue that is bedevilling the lives of the two brotherly people. He missed this chance. India also missed the chance particularly BJP which was the only party that could and would have solved the Kashmir problem. Because this party was not a party to partition and the Kashmir dispute. Congress was. It was an opportunity to discuss in detail. Congress party would never do it because the problem was created by the Prime Minister Pandith Jawaharlal Nehru - a Congressite just because he was a Kashmiri Pandith and did not want the State to go to Pakistan despite the fact that it was a Muslim majority State. He did this rather selfishly without regard to any benefit to India and her people. The blood is on Mr. Nehru's hand for all those that have died and continue to die in Kashmir. Just because he was a Kashmiri Pandith he held the entire country to ransom. This is the price he let the people of India pay for the love they bestowed on him and his family. President Sir, you have not gone into important details. On the principle of majority, India conguered the State of Hyderabad stating that the majority was a non-Muslim population although it is debatable if the people of the State wanted that invasion on themselves. They - both Hindus and Muslims loved the ruler. The will of the people was never ascertained. There was no referendum - nothing. The most peaceful and prosperous state in the sub-continent was invaded and annexed. Read Time magazine Feb. 22, 1937. It was attacked, thousands of people killed and the state taken over forcibly just as Kashmir was in 1948. It was a holocaust of immense proportions. It was swept under the carpet. The world watched with silence. The book has not dwelled on any of the most important and key issues and drawn a parallel and the contradiction. The principle must have been explained. He has not at all talked of the so called "cross border terrorism" a term coined by India for the freedom struggle of the people of Kashmir. Whether it was cross border terrorism or not is debatable. What is not debatable is the existence of a million army in Kashmir. The very existence of so many army men is testimony to the fact that all is not well. Why don't they have the same army in UP or Bihar say. It means that there is a problem which India is trying to contain by State Terrorism. The people have risen up to protest against mis-rule of over 50 years. The book misses to mention all this. There was no need for him to wash dirty linen in public too with regard to A.Q.Khan. Why did he give so much of importance to him? Why a scientist was made a hero in the first place I fail to understand. Nuclear scientists are state secrets who are kept under wraps. Who knows of the Nuclear scintists of US, Britain, France, South Africa, India and so on. His recklessness and irresponsibility is unpardonable. I am no fan of his but any mention could have been avoided to save embarrasment to the Pakistani people living abroad.

definately one to read
I have plenty of knowledge about Pakistani Politics and have always thought Musharraf was the most honest and compatent leaders the contry has had for decades. Under his tenure the country saw prosperity it hadnt seen for a long time due to corrupt politions in power before him. But I was surprised at how open Musharraf's memoirs were and it was a very enjoyable read. Definately an eye opener

A Must Read
Delivery was quick. A really good book and gives an interesting insight to the working of the Pakistan state leading upto the bloodless coup against the then Peime Minister, Nawaz Sharif and an account of what followed and an insight into perhaps the best leader Pakistan has had after Jinnah.
