Love?Com, Vol. 3 (3)

Love * Com
Continues to be a very funny and engaging high school romantic comedy set in Japan. Get pretty silly at times, but is pretty much spot on in terms of the adolescence awkwardness and the emotional up & down of young relationships. Will continue to read the series!

They're a well-matched pair . . . sort of.
Risa and Otani are way too cute together, even though they pretend they can't stand each other. What I like about that dynamic is that they actually continue to act like they hate each other sometimes even when they're being sweet, to the point that their taunts become like terms of endearment. Neither knows how to handle it when an ACTUAL endearing gesture happens, like when Risa just decides to buy Otani a wristband to celebrate his success on the basketball team and he's flabbergasted but then flatters her by wearing it all the time and saying he loves it. I like the side characters too, and I like how they both reacted hilariously to getting their heights measured. The only thing I'm kind of iffy about is Seiko. I'm not sure how to feel about her because in a way she's a classic "girl is revealed to REALLY BE A BOY" gag and the story treats this revelation as if it's a clear reason for a straight boy to not like her anymore. And Seiko acts like she doesn't really mind this and is used to it but accepts it as her lot in life, which is kind of screwy. She mentions that she has always considered herself a girl, and she presents as a girl and has a name she's chosen derived from her birth name (which others in the story occasionally use in conversation like they think it's her "real" name, and that's really really gross). What I did like about it was that Otani reacted to her attention with mixed feelings, and eventually made it a point to convince her that she did not in any way disgust him the way she was expecting him to say. (He apparently still considers it completely impossible to find her attractive that way now that he knows she's trans, but he doesn't shame her or question his sexuality or try to punish her for it, and that's refreshing.) I'm not so sure how I feel about Risa being encouraged to understand being really tall as less of an impediment to getting with Otani than Seiko has on account of having the "wrong" parts--almost like she's announcing that her desires are hopeless but she still goes for it, so Risa might as well go for it too since she is at least "really a girl." (Otani, however, has said he doesn't even think of Risa as a girl because she's so ridiculously tall next to him. So I guess it's not just trans girls who get that treatment in this story. It must be more complicated than that.)In any case I want to see what happens now that Risa is accepting she really does have feelings for Otani, and how many volumes it's going to take before they actually make it official. Haha!

Rivals(?)
Volume 3 is where "Love Com" really starts to pick up steam. First, Risa must deal with Haruka, who still wants her to be his girlfriend. Risa doesn't really like the idea, but she considers it to get back at a certain someone... She starts to wonder whether she might like Ootani after all. Then Seiko-chan, a freshman girl with the hots for Ootani, shows up, forcing Risa to consider her feelings even more. One thing I love about "Love Com" is the fact that it doesn't make bad guys out of the romantic rivals. Haruka can be a little annoying, but he's more childish than mean. And Seiko-chan... oh, Seiko-chan! She's really not what she seems, and she ends up being a great character. She's really funny at times, but you're still able to relate to her in her serious moments. Seiko and Risa are able to identify with each others' feelings, and they have a good friendship. I prefer this so much to the typical bickering that goes on between rivals. Also in this volume, Risa finally admits to herself that she likes Ootani.I was glad that this happened so soon in the series, rather than spending volume upon volume watching the heroine denying the blatantly obvious to herself. The scene in which she admits it is funny, sweet, and very original. I'd never seen it done that way before. If you weren't impressed with volumes 1 and 2 of "Love Com," I think you should give it another chance with volume 3. This is where it really starts to set itself apart from most shojo manga.
