True Lovecraft + Unbridled Nic Cage + Alpacas
Has the pleasure of seeing this at the Alamo Drafthouse near me. The movie is remarkably true to the key story points and while the performances are over the top, Richard Stanley captures the dread and charm of Lovecraft in a way I've not seen before. There are a few elements that felt extraneous and felt a bit indulgent for my tastes, but I cannot wait to see Spectrevision and Stanley put together the Dunwich Horror and whatever the third film in his Lovecraft Trilogy might be. Also, I hope you like alpacas, as they feature prominently in this film.

As good as Lovecraft has been done in film.
Unfortunately it still suffers from a few problems that for me, were hard to get past. For one, anyone even remotely familiar knows, as soon as they see "Based on the story by H.P. Lovecraft," that the meteor is a harbinger for some ancient evil god that defies human conception. You're five minutes into the movie and there's nothing to figure out, even if you have never read Color Out of Space. Second, is this trying to be a horror movie? I never really felt a sense of dread. Monster reveals were too early and in too full detail. Is Lovecraft even supposed to be frightening? Third, some of the visual effects which could have really contributed to the experience were poorly done, especially the vision at the end of the film. But, forgiving all of that, this is still the best that Lovecraft has ever been done on screen. Nick Cage is hilarious early in the movie. And most of the flaws that people will point too arise directly from the difficulty in trying to migrate Lovecraft from writing to cinema. My 5 star review is a vote for more high budget Lovecraft movies.

This movie was soo bad that it hurt me to even give it 1 star. This was pure garbage and a waste of my rental fee.

50% Original Story, 50% From Beyond
As an avid reader of Lovecraft's work, this was the one I wanted to see in movie form the most. The creators behind this film didn't disappoint. Color out of Space has a healthy mix of original plot, some new stuff thrown in to "moviefy" it, and a healthy dose of shlock sprinkled on top. The effects are good and so is the acting (yes, we get plenty of Nicolas Cage screaming), and there never really feels like a slow point. Some of the visuals are disturbing, so keep that in mind if you're watching with younger people.Mild spoilers below! If you're looking for a 1 to 1 reflection of the original story, you will not find it here. It hits plenty of the same notes, with the thing coming down from space and slowly ruining the lives of the nearby family, though it's been turned into more of a supernatural thriller/creature feature. It works well enough; the monsters and effects are one part John Carpenter's The Thing and one part From Beyond. All of the practical effects are very well done, and most of the CGI is subtle and looks good too (there's a jumpscare with a creature about halfway through the movie which had me worried, but the rest was pretty good). If you're a fan of Lovecraft, a fan of weird monster films, or just interested in an unconventional alien movie, I recommend you check this one out.

Not even during a Coronavirus outbreak.. DO NOT WATCH!!!!
This movie was atrocious. I personally have been a fan of Nicholas Cage and will continue to be a fan, however this movie was just plain garbage. I would love to have that time and money I spent renting this paid back. The premise sounded super cool, but quickly boiled down to being ridiculous and had outrageous effects. I enjoyed Cage's acting chops and the other actors tried their best, however I couldn't get over how little chemistry Cage had as portraying a father. The chemistry just was not there and it fell short of believable. The daughter was annoying and the older son seemed aloof. I get what this movie was shooting for with the sci-fi trope, however the special effects were too over the top or non-existent. The scene where the mother/child were screaming drove me mad I had to shut this off. Even with the coronavirus outbreak, save yourself the time and pick up a new hobby or learn a language. Do not waste your quarantine time on this heap of garbage.

The movie warns don't drink the water but the story wasn't interesting enough to care
Color Out of Space was based upon a story by H.P. Lovecraft, the celebrated American horror-science fiction writer. The story revolves around a family that live out in the woods who happen to have a meteor crash into their backyard. It infects the water and completely distorts reality for everyone involved. The movie is very mixed and will likely have people love it and hate it as well. Here’s the good. The story is very original. There are mixes of great visuals and horror mixed in together. Nicolas Cage who plays the father Nathan gets to play crazy and does a great job, and the daughter Lavinia played by Madeleine Arthur is a standout as well. The problem for me was that I never felt a connection to the film. Even when things started getting weird, which I usually like it just didn’t get me interested enough to care. The only redeeming quality was to watch Cage go nuts which is always fun, otherwise the movie did very little for me.

A fun and enjoyable ride
I found this movie to be relatively enjoyable, but I can see how some people may not derive as much enjoyment as I did. Prior to watching this: I read the original short story, watched the older foreign-language film, and seen all of the prior Richard Stanley movies including the documentary about his attempt to film The Island of Doctor Moreau. Needless to say, this movie was right up my alley and while the scares were lacking, the final product left me wanting more Richard Stanley movies and more Lovecraft adaptations that are not just your run of the mill Cthulhu-mainstream-watered down drivel.

Very, very, very, very, very disappointing.
I do not expect for one moment that the majority of review readers will agree with me, but here goes. Nicolas Cage is one of, if not THE least popular film actors I have watched. He is invariably wooden and almost always seems to overfill his glass with far too much bourbon. I don't know why I broke my rule again by ordering a blue-ray film with him in it, but it is definitely the last time I do so. disappointing.Joely Richardson, who I could not describe as a gifted film actress, was also way below par in this dreadfully boring 1hour 50 minutes of utter drivel. She is or was the epitome of an English rose with a lovely clear English accent to boot. To hear her trying to talk with an American accent was an abomination.Apparently, this film was based upon a short story by H P Lovecraft and it is a great pity that the film's director; Richard Stanley, did not opt to make a SHORT film from it, a very short film. The least he might have done was to employ a bog standard plank of wood instead of Nichols Cage, I might even have given the film one more star. However, I will never again make the mistake of purchasing a Blu-ray film featuring Cage.

Great
I read the short story. It is good and not a Cthulhu mythos tale but one of Lovecraft crossover SF horror tales. If you have prime you can see a low budget attempt at it as well for free. I managed 20 mins before I gave up in disgust.I really enjoyed this. Richard Stanley is a great director and if you have not watched them Dust Devil and Hardware are very good also. The effects are good, the music is good and the acting is good. It is not you typical Cage performance but of late his is no longer the A list celeb he was once was. Now we get to witness a great story. If you like Lovecraft this will be right up your street.

Amazing, I read the book after this.
I really love this film. It actually made me read a book which is pretty rare. The book feels like it's introducing an idea and this is using it amazingly. It's a must-see for anyone but especially for Lovecraft fans. This is a perfect follow up from Mandy for Nick Cage, too bad Jiu Jitsu ruined the streak. Nicholas Cage has always been one for cringe and overacting, but this performance is amazing. It does an amazing job making the concept something incomprehensible to humans visual. It's brilliant cosmic horror is what I'm trying to say.

Mixed Bag, Depends What You're Looking For
First the pros and cons of the product.+ Good design for the case and slip cover+ Good visual rendering, the titular color pops- No special features- Audio mixing could be better, dialogue is sometimes dround ouyFilm review:There are some narrative issues and the characters could be more fleshed out for what they were trying to do. I also don't think that it quite achieves the mind-bending heights it's going for. Some of the changes from Lovecraft's original story don't quite work so well, and the film would have benefitted from less reliance on CGI.However, there's some nice cinematography, the strange lighting makes for some cool atmospheric shots, and Nick Cage has a few Nick Cage moments. If you're interested and it's available for cheap, try it out. But I wouldn't rush, nor set your expectations too high.

Love it
I've been a fan of Richard Stanley for years and I was very excited to see this. The film is brilliant. A very good adaptation of a HP Lovecraft short. The effects are excellent, even if som cgi looks a little off, but it's not about that. The dialogue is raw, the acting is stellar and the film making is top notch.
