Perfect critter habitat
Bought for my son as a Christmas gift. His favorite thing to do outdoors is to catch his critters. This was perfect for him to observe all the different insects and plants he finds. I would buy again!

Perfect for the budding junior naturalist.
It’s getting loads of use and holding up well. Many frogs, toads, fireflies, caterpillars, and other bugs have had temporary housing in this little habitat. It’s much easier to see into than previous habitats we’ve had. The size seemed a bit small at first, but it’s not a permanent home, so it definitely works as it is. Just gives my son a chance to observe, photograph, & ID various critters - he is a naturalist at heart, so this thing is a must have item for our family. :-) The light is a nice feature. The air holes are great but not large enough to let the various critters we have observed out of the habitat. I liked the door better on a previous model we had, but all in all this habitat has more pros than that one did. So thumbs up from this nature loving family. 👍🏼👍🏼

Nice gift but...
This item came a lot smaller than my daughter was expecting. It is well made with a magnifying circle on top to look up close at the inside of your creature barn and a separate circle shaped removable lid to place food inside. There is also a cool light feature that can be switched on and off and a handle bar to carry your barn around. It is very small but the right size for small kids to manage and carry. The only thing I really don't like is that there isn't a lockable lid. The lid comes off too easy. For this reason, and that reason alone, This is not the perfect gift. I would not buy another one for my nephew or anyone else because of this reason alone. We are currently using this to hold praying mantis egg cases. Once they hatch we will place them outside. A frog can easily remove the lid.

My grandson is already hunting for a frog to keep in his critter house in his room.
What can I say? Little boys love "critters" so when this critter house arrived prior to Easter and warm days, he was very excited. He is looking forward to summer and finding a frog or tortoise or anole to keep in his critter house. As a field biologist by profession, what an ingenious design. I could see two dozen of these in an elementary or preschool classroom housing local insects and reptiles' for kids to observe and care for. The light bulb feature is a plus so you can keep reptiles and insects warm. I love that this is water proof so you could catch tadpoles and watch them develop. Endless opportunities for learning with this toy. Your junior naturalist needs this for their room.

Bugs escape and handles/lid not secured firmly
My kids are excited to learn about bugs and I'm excited to end the stigma that spiders are bad. I've managed to catch several house spiders and we'd been keeping them in glass Ball canning jars but I was excited to get these critter keepers instead since it has a light and I could easily add bugs and the kids could enjoy watching the feast. Well, I've put two house spiders (a parson spider and a domestic house spider. Neither spider are very large but neither are tiny, either and have been significantly larger than any of the small holes that are in this critter barn. Both times I tried to use the barn, the spiders were gone by morning. I have yet to figure out how they escaped but after several days of carefully inspecting the box to be sure they weren't hiding REALLY REALLY WELL, I took the lid off for a better inspection and confirmed that, yes, I managed to let two spiders loose in my daughter's room. Very disappointed that we'll have to continue to use the canning jars since it's harder to add bugs when you've caught a web-spinning spider (disturbing the web every time you insert a bug). The second issue with these is that we took them down to the creek in case we came across any interesting critters. The handles kept popping out while my kids were carrying them even though I made sure the handles were secure before giving to them. They were not rough with these at all - carried them like normal by the handle only to have the handles pop out on the sides. If we had caught a frog or anything with weight, there is no way the handles would have held while carrying the box around. Aside from the mystery of the disappearing house spiders and the handles not being more secure, they are nice little critter barns. I would recommend them for ages 4+ because the lids and handles can easily pop off if a small child were to "play" with the barn while a critter was inside. Even when I've made sure the lid is properly closed, I don't trust it to not pop off...it's too easy to open, in my opinion. The light and the largeness and ability to add more bugs without having to remove the entire lid is wonderful, but I've determined that my kids can only use the boxes for observation and (not actually handle the boxes) to prevent any escaped critters which is disappointing.

Bug catchin'
I ordered this for my 6 year old son who is obsessed with rolli polli right now. Well any other bugs too. I gave him one of my good Mason jars at first but he dropped and broke it eventually. So i wanted something safer for him. I came cross this critter box with a light. Unfortunately before he could try it out his little sister got a hold of the top. Yes it is true the top does not stay on well. But that is probably so that you can let what ever critter you caught go quickly. Anyway she got it first and removed the little cap on the top. She lost or hid somewhere. She is 2 and like a little squirrel. Takes stuff and stashes it in God knows where. Well now the the top has no critter cap. So I emailed the company that sells it and they sell replacement parts. This part must gets lost lot. I ordered 2 from their site. So customer service is great. The caps are about $2 bucks. But better than buying a new box. Overall this box is for older kids that can keep up with stuff not for 2 year old critters kids that like to hide stuff. Overall I like it and would order again.

Great little creature container
This habitat has kept hold of some small beetles my child found for a couple of weeks now with no issues. The microscope is neat, albeit a bit simple. My child likes how easy it is to see inside, and the hole for the microscope makes adding food and whatnot easy. Would make a great gift for a small child interested in nature.

The light, magnified window, and overall design made this good choice for my child’s critter collecting. My only complaint is I wish the lid could latch on rather it is just sitting on top.

Awesome, my 5 year old son loves it. It is fairly expensive for a glorified Tupperware container. But it is what it is! The light is a wonderful touch!
