One of the most important and controversial figures in the history of race relations in America and the world at large, Marcus Garvey was the first great black orator of the twentieth century. The Jamaican-born African-American rights advocated dismayed his enemies as much as he dazzled his admirers. Of him, Martin Luther King, Jr., said, “He was the first man, on a mass scale and level, to give millions of Negroes a sense of dignity and destiny, and make the Negro feel that he was somebody.” A printer and newspaper editor in his youth, Garvey furthered his education in England and eventually traveled to the United States, where he impressed thousands with his speeches and millions more through his newspaper articles. His message of black pride resonated in all his efforts. This anthology contains some of his most noted writings, among them “The Negro’s Greatest Enemy,” "Declaration of the Rights of the Negro Peoples of the World," and "Africa for the Africans," as well as powerful speeches on unemployment, leadership, and emancipation. Essential reading for students of African-American history, this volume will also serve as a useful reference for anyone interested in the history of the civil rights movement. Review: A thoroughly excellent recollection! - I have been fascinated with the life and works of old Marcus Garvey since I was a boy growing up in Kingston, Jamaica. My father was an avowed Garveyite. Taking pride in showing off his certificate of investment in the UNIA - The Black Star Line, as well as other mementos & regalia of having been associated with Marcus Garvey. So this book of his poems and speeches are a powerful recollection and endorsement of the power which Marcus Garvey meant within his very progressive association. His poetry are especially enlightening and inspiring, as they speak of his intelligence, as well as his conviction for the important/crucial work in which he is engaged. This book also reminds me that Garvey's ideas still has purpose in our contemporary life in 2017. I also recommend this book as a vital starter for any student or critic of Garvey's life, work & ideas. Review: Did the job - I liked the speeches and knowing where they were written from. And I like Harvey’s style of writing, it’s very eloquent and inspirational. I’d recommend this book to any body who want to learn about Marcus Garvey and is hungry for persons who truly believe in the uplifting and empire of black people without any anterior motives.

Apparently, Garvey ran into a political construct of imperial supremacy right here in American. They set him up and then took him down. The speeches are powerful, truthful and riveting. You can draw the parallels from then to now, and you won't see much differences. Every person that thinks they know something about the Black struggle in America must buy this book. The man was a genius and displayed real leadership characteristics for the progress of Black people.

Suprisingly great book.
I am sadden by the fact that we have allowed others to dictate someone's history. Before reading this book I envisioned an arrogant, self absorber, ignorant man. But this book makes very clear that Mr. Garvey was an INCREDIBLE man. There has been no one else like him since. He envisioned a country/continent for all people of African ancestory. He spoke for the 400,000,000 (at the time) blacks in the world. He hated no one, but really loved his race. He did not speak negatively about the other races, but spoke of them in a manner of reverence. I do not believe that his beliefs would make sense in today's world, but what would today's world be like if we followed his lead? This book has now opened a window in this history for me. Now I must read W.E.B Debois' book(s). I need to research the NAACP. The only things I did not like about the book was the fact that it was short and only covered a short period of time in his life. I highly recommend this book for those of you who are seeking the truth. It will truly surprise you.

This book took me on a learn-ed journey and I must say, it vexed me, it intrigued me, saddened me tremendously but I left the pages of this book feeling uplifted and also came away feeling sad that so many of my sisters and brothers who lived at that time did not appreciate what Marcus Garvey was trying to do for the greater good of our people. I recommend this book to everyone but especially to my brothers and sisters of the Black race.

Excellent for Black History
This is the part of History that is being ignored. The writings and speeches of Marcus Garvey is good reading. This is the ugly part of how the blacks in America was divided. If we take a look back and picture a America where ALL blacks stook together on one accord for one purpose, it would not be hard to imagine where we would be now. This book takes my mind to that thought. Marcus Garvey was not a racist, he just loved his race. I loved his writing and what he was trying to accomplish!

Every person of African descent must read it
A book that changed my life. If all African people can read it, as we should, we would improve our wretched condition overnight.

SIR MARCUS GARVEY WE SALUTE YOU!!!!!!!!!!!
As a teacher and now entering the mental health professional I highly recommend this book to those of African descendant as it informs you of the greatness of Marcus Garvey. It helped me as i entered a racist arena to know the greatness i came from. Marcus Garvey had a beautiful mind, yet we do not study him in the western society. He was an example to all men. He respected black women and appreciated the intelligence and beauty of ALL complexions of black women. He promoted his race and his works can and is supported 'change' today. He did not hate other races, he simply LOVED his own race. A special man isolated in being ahead of his time. What an Intelligent, proud and defiant hero. Fearless and NOT corrupt at all. He wanted to see his race achieve post slavery. We did not begin at the bottom - Sir Marcus Garvey was taking us BACK to the top. A rare man. A movement is rising to educate the black minds and I am glad to be able to have found this book as it came at a key time for me. His work shall live on and is making a difference. His message is gaining momentum.....we salute you ...forever Sir Marcus Garvey.

REVIEW DO FYADUB
