Great 7+ year old Book. Boys or Girls.
I just bought this for granddaughter to give this Christmas (2018.) I had to read it first to be sure it was appropriate. Well, it definitely passed the test! I was hooked after the first two pages. Wonderful tales that will not give a child nightmares. (If you've ever read the original "Mother Goose Stories"--yikes! Those are meant to scare children!)The most violent thing in this book is a mention of a pig and cow being eaten, but it did not even word it that graphically. (They were gone in an instant.) Wonderful, imaginative tales that keep your interest, along with excellent illustrations.I found the ending a bit abrupt (although most of the tales in this children's book end abruptly, you are immediately led to a new "blarney" tale from the main character's imagination.)I'm guessing that an imaginative child would find no problem with the abrupt ending what-so-ever.

By Crikey, it's Ummm Mmmm good!
I bought this book for my nephew but decided to wait to give it to him for several reasons. The main one being that I absolutely LOVE the book myself! LOL! However, while the story is good and I know he'll enjoy it, he's still a bit young (not even 2); it seems more appropiate for 4 years old or older. In the story, Young Kate uses her wits to save her family and her village with an ending I never saw coming -- not your typical 'Fairy Tale Ending' but an excellent one nonetheless especially for our modern times. I fell in love with the illustration's ton of detail that kept me looking at each page long after the reading was over.My one complaint is that, while the book itself is good sized so you can see the pictures, the paperback edition seems a bit flimsy. If this story is to be loved (and thus read) as much as I think it will then I may have to order another copy or two to last through the years. Perhaps the school binding edition is more sturdy? Both girls and boys will enjoy this story and I think you grown ups will, too.

A wonderful surprise ending!
The crazy little story in this book has become one of my 6 year old daughters favorite bedtime stories. The first time we read through the book I was thinking to myself "where is this story going?" as it seemed to meander on, but in the end it all came together & the surprise ending of this young lady turning down a marriage proposal from the king in order to go on an adventure of her own...well that was the icing on the cake! I couldn't think of a better message for my little girl. The story is fun, wide spread and full of twists and turns AND best of all the main character turns out to be a very adventurous & independent young woman..just the kind of role model I want my girl to be reading about. Two thumbs up from me!

Wonderful story
My 3 (girl) and 4 (boy) year olds love this story (as did I)! It’s difficult to write a review without giving the story away. It’s a story about inclusion, Irish folklore, and wits. I think young and old could appreciate this story.

Irish story telling at its best
Having grown up in an Irish family, we're all used to tall tales. This is a lovely tall tale with a female hero who saves herself and her family from the noose with her stories for the king. The art is fantastic. My little girl loved it. We borrowed it from the Library based on A Mighty Girl suggestion. My 7 year old liked it so much that she wanted to buy it. Bought extra copies for my O'Sullivan friends and family. My daughter can read it on her own, but she prefers Mommy reading it with the brogue.

Fun adventure for older kids
This book is packed full of adventure and lore - definitely a fun read, but probably better for older kids. Mine are 2 and 5 and they just weren't interested in it yet, especially because it's long. I really enjoyed it, though, and the illustrations are wonderful. I rotate books on our mantle for the changing holidays and seasons, so this is definitely a keeper for our St. Patrick's Day display.

Fun girl power book
Nice book about a sister/daughter saves the day and calls the shots in her life. Not as snappy as The Paperbag Princess, but good girl power book for 4-8 age group.

Clever story for kids
Brilliantly clever story. My kids love this one - and it's great fun for adults to read aloud. Also a great feminist read, the girl saves herself and leaves the King in the dust!

It's a cheap flimsy cover and gives the book more ...
It's a cheap flimsy cover and gives the book more of a feel of a comic than a book. I regret buying it and wish I had bought something else hardcover. The story is quite long and convoluted and too long for a bedtime story. I wil read it a few more times to the children. They said it was Ok.
