Exceeded my expectations
I bought this book because I wanted to expand my range of music for piano and also make a few things on FL Studio on my down time. I couldn't find any actual pages from the book online, but I still took and gander at this book. I opened the book, started reading a few pages and realized I should have bought this book earlier!!! it has so much music theory knowledge in it, that it would have been helpful during my studies in Music Theory because I didn't learn a thing in that class. Anyways, if you are looking for a book that has lots of theory in it or just want to play early jazz (more of ragtime) then you should definitely buy this book.

AN addictive approach to learning the basics
I learned to play piano (at age 50) from this series of books.I had not done piano lessons at all; my interest at first was really in using the piano to learn jazz harmony (for playing guitar). Valerio's bebop book and Mark Harrisson's smooth-jazz book were excellent for this purpose, explaining voicings and scales and styles of playing. Now Im more interested in learning to play better, and again these books hit the perfect balance of erudition and attainability. The fingerings alone would have made the book worthwhile, exposing the mystery of those fast octave-spanning runs that seem so effortless for real pianists. I can see that I might outgrow these books in the near future, but without them I would never have got into playing piano regularly in the first place. I strongly recommend them to anyone wishing to learn jazz basics, even if you have no piano background.

Extremely helpful for understanding and learning the language of Bebop
Extremely helpful for understanding and learning the musical language of Bebop Jazz Piano. Clear Structure of the book, could not be better. Thanks from Switzerland to Mr. John Valerio who impressed me already in other books with his logical way of describing the real important points.

Unnecessarily complicated
while I like how the CD sounds, it's too unnecessarily complicated. I showed it to my teacher, and she said that no pianist thinks the way the music is arranged in this book. The left hand is over complicated. The harmony parts could be simplified, otherwise you just end up having to make your own arrangement. If you tried to play the left hand exactly as written, you'll spend 10 years working on one tune.

OMG! Just what I needed.
The riffs gave me an improvisational basis to build upon that I needed. This is coming from a student of bebop that thought he couldn't learn anything new.

prepare for hard work
The content is good, easy to follow and informative but be prepared to create your own exercises. Learn the "changes" and the other style file pieces and play along to the backing. Not easy to start with, but a little each day....I am hoping to get onto post pop and stride ( by the same author). Good luck. The book's pages were coming apart at the bottom, so I used a quick bit of glue to sort that out.

If you’re interested in bebop get this book. It’s got all the foundational stuff you need: soround notes, triplets (various permutations), scales, chords and progressions & various exercises. Little chords (like Barry Harris likes to say —Bud Powell style), big chords. Left & right hand chord notes, how to put them together. Moving chords up in 4ths... phew !Get it man, just get it!
