Hope this helps. **Q: the hanging rails keep collapsing after five mins, anybody else had this issue? the plastic caps on the end keep detaching. any advice?** A: Never had this issue with any of my storage units, but you really have to press down on the caps to fix them into place, if that doesn't work/hold weight it could be a faulty batch, the caps should fit tightly on the tubes. **Q: Can you put stuff on top of it?** A: All the shelves including the top, are very sturdy metal poles covered with a taut thick fabric. So yes, you can place things on top, but with weight and safety in mind. I’ve used mine in the home of an elderly lady and have secured it to the wall for extra security. The thick plastic connections make it a nice strong and sturdy rail. Easy to put together. Does recommend a hammer which I did need but more for tapping. However , if your strong enough a strong squeeze and a wack or two with your hands will easily push parts together so that the bars don't pop out opposite side. I've bought many cheap versions of these and put straight in the bin. This is trusty and good value for money wardrobe. Very happy!
