Make Sure You Know What You're Buying
There seem to be enough reviews about the story and art content of this book, so rather than dwelling on the same I'd like to make sure all who show interest in this particular product are fully aware of what they're getting.Let me start out by saying that Amazon's Product Information, at the time of this writing, lists this Hardcover book at a length of 200 pages, which is completely untrue. It is maybe 75 pages at most, and this discrepancy is partially to blame for my confusion in exactly what I was purchasing.Back in the early 1970's DC Comics obtained the license to publish a comic book based on the famous pulp/radio character The Shadow. The series lasted for a dozen issues with five of them written and illustrated by Dennis O'Neil and Michael Kaluta. Just over a decade later DC collected the O'Neil/Kaluta issues, along with a brand new story called "In The Toils of Wing Fat," into a hardcover collection titled The Private Files of The Shadow which runs 128 pages. To my knowledge this was the only time these issues had ever been collected and the 1989 hardcover is long out of print. The titular story of THIS book, The Shadow 1941: Hitler's Astrologer, is a re-issue of a 1988 graphic novel published by Marvel Comics that re-united O'Neil and Kaluta and runs just over 65 pages in length. Seeing the product descriptions page length of 200 pages led me to assume that Dynamite had issued a new hardcover collection of O'Neil/Kaluta's DC issues AND their Marvel graphic novel. Alas, this is not the case.I have no issues with the story content or art, but did find myself disappointed that more was not included, especially given the price point of $20 for something so short. It also feels like a missed opportunity, as I would imagine that Dynamite obtaining the publishing rights to The Shadow would allow them to reprint any and all previous material.Don't let this dissuade you from purchasing because what there is is definitely good. But be aware of what it is you're really getting before you make your decision.

Great art & setting; story a bit bland
Story was a bit slow and anticlimatic. The art was great and it's fun to see The Shadow battle the WWII baddies. The story itself was just a bit boring. It seemed to move slow and then just end. The build up at the beginning seemed to just fizzle out. If you like The Shadow, it's worth checking out, but don't set high expectations.

Beautiful Artwork. Shame About The Story Though.
The first thing you've probably noticed is the beautiful artwork. That doesn't let up. The art throughout the piece is superb, even down to the shape of the shadow's speech bubbles, which are literally dripping with menace. The story's an interesting one, if hard to follow without at least a cursory knowledge of German/ American politics immediately preceding the US's involvement in the war.The story is also criminally short, and has extreme pacing issues towards the end. It gives one the impression that perhaps a longer story was cut at it's first act. And the writer, despite their skill, was unable to hide the sutures.Don't expect a large, globetrotting mystery delving into the depths of Nazi Astrology. In fact, Astrology rarely comes up in the plot at all. sure, it's the macguffin the plot revolves around, but nowhere was it absolutely necessary that astrology, and not something else entirely, could have played an important role in the plot. This is more a short, atmospheric story that's pulpy as all hell, and on those terms (combined with the aforementioned artwork), this kicks ass. It ain't cheap though, caveat emptor.

The Shadow at his best.
I bought this when it originally came out in hardback. I love it then and I love it now. This is as good as it gets for the Shadow in a graphic format. The story and art are top notch.

An intriguing Shadow story
The art is detailed and unique in this book, and the story works well. I recommend this graphic novel for others who want to read more about this fascinating character. It's a shorter title in comparison to an omnibus, but still enjoyable.

Using his power to influence evil.
This graphic novel is a perfect combo: a great Shadow story, true to the kind of storyline originally seen in the pulp pieces, combined with the excellent art of Kaluta and his team. Definitely a first-rate product.

Michael Kaluta Captures the Shadow like No Other Artist
The title says it all. The story was a fun purplish romp, but Kaluta's art is the selling point here. Beautiful.

The Shadow done right
A Shadow story that concentrates more on Harry Vincent than the Shadow. Well told and absolutely beautiful Kaluta art. Recommended.
