Great action thrill ride with a good story for dirt cheap!
I'll admit honestly I was not a fan of the original God of War. All my friends felt as if I was "whacked" for not seeing it as the best game of the year. They might have been right but the point was I hated playing button mash mini games just to beat the bosses and Kratos seemed like a muscle bound tough agro kid on roids.Yes he has a good reason for being angry, psychotic, and sad. Ares made him kill his own family. This is why he agreed to help the gods if they wiped his memory of what he had done. Yet throughout the whole game Kratos was a prick. Imagine the jock you knew in high-school that stuffed you in lockers just for fun, add red paint over part of his face and bam, you have GOW's protagonist!Fast forward and we come to God of war 2. The thing the second GOW does better is everything is balanced. You do not have to tap the "o" button quite as many times to rip a head off or ram your weapons down a Minotaur's throat. The button mash sequences also seem more forgiving and in most battles it seemed like if you got the sequence wrong enough it would finally make the combination easier.GOW 2 like its' predecessor has a good story line. Kratos is tricked by Zeus and loses all his powers thus must get the help of Gaia and the titans to regain his throne. While this may sound straight forward and lack luster the way it is done is truly brilliant. The areas are much more expansive and awe inspiring and between levels sometimes requires you fight ariel foes on the back of a fiery winged Pegasus. Puzzles are normally a bit tough but in a fun way. A little common sense can take you a long way and it is normally the simplest solution that is the right one.As before you get to upgrade your weapons by collecting red orbs and as before you have heavy attack combos (less swings but more devastating) and light hit combos (farther reaching, more strikes, but do less damage.)For those like me who were frustrated "normal creatures" could kill you cheaply with a single attack there is less of that now. Whereas before you seemed forced to slay the monsters a particular way now it is your preference. You can still do instant brutal elite kills if you mash all the right buttons but you can also opt to pummel them by throwing your chained blades around until your foes hit the dirt. Yes, GOW 2 is a bit more forgiving on the casual gamer. While it is challenging is does not feel impossible. This is further implemented by more check points and save points. As you can expect there are spells and other weapons. The barbarian's hammer is a slow but high damage slugger and you can also do feats such as slowing time, summoning shock bolts, boosting your attack proficiency by utilizing rage of the titans, Icarus's wings allow you to gracefully glide over longer distances, as well as turning foes to stone by using a gorgon head. None of this is super innovative but it is fun.One thing GOW as a series can be commended for is it truly is like those 2d plat-formers of the past. You do a lot of sliding down ropes, net climbing, swimming, jumping from plat form to plat form, pulling levers, and falling to your demise down bottomless pits. It's good to know the team saw the greatness of super mario bros., the old castlevanias, as well as Contra. To take what we loved about the retro age and apply it into 3-dimensions is admirable. So is Kratos anymore sympathetic to the audience? Likely not. This game comes off as being so manly it is extremely homophobic in its' over the top violence and blatant nudity but it is all so well done no one will care. The music and visuals are stirring and vibrant able to compete with today's top dogs in the action genre even though by most standards the ps-2 is a dead system. If you have a ps-2 collecting dust there is no reason to neglect it any further if you have not purchased GOW 2. I got my copy for $9.95 and its' a greatest hit. Even if you are a penny pincher this game will not set you back one bit. Considering most of today's games can range up to $60.00 a pop this is a literal god send if you're bored and don't have much money to throw around.Pros+More forgiving to casual gamers unlike its' predecessors.+Better enviormental designs.+Puzzles are fun and not overly complex+Button mash mini games are easier+A large assortment of cool bosses. Also expect to see some familiar faces from the past.+Old school plat-former action brought perfectly into 3 dimensions.+A riveting story of tragedy, betrayal, and loss that uses Greek mythology as an effective back bone.+Aphrodite and those two sultry kinky muses. Nuff said.Cons-Kratos is awesome but he is still a jerk. This is not a role-model for adults OR kids. He has likely spawned some "Kratos spaz-boys" across the internet with the maturity ratio of 9 year old boys who got done watching Rambo movies back to back. Still I rather deal with Kratos imitators than those annoying new-wave Joker nuts.-I love the violence and nudity but I am able to admit it is a bit over the top. This game has a big case of "homophobia extreme" making you question if Kratos loves men in togas but still screams at the top of his lungs he is the best gift to women since Casanova. Doth protest too much Spartan?_If you liked GOW for the fact it was teeth gnashing hard GOW 2 may let you down a little in the challenge department.-There are more puzzles so if you are an action junky I understand your pain. Despite that this is still a thrill-ride so don't pass it up regardless.-Some gods and goddesses do not have much to do with the actual story. Aphrodite is seen in a messed up vision sequence in the beginning and Hades is in a battle scene with Titans but does not pop up later. If some of the deities were not important why even have them listed in the manual?

A worthy sequel and argueably the PS2's greatest title
As if the first game was not good enough, God of War 2 is (in my opinion) THE single greatest game ever released on the Playstation 2.The story: If you've played God of War, you know what happened. Kratos, who is a tormented and unbelievably angry Spartan warrior, kills Ares, who was the god of war. This game picks exactly where the first game left off.Kratos is the god of war now and he is still not very happy about it. He is hated by the other gods, but he doesntcare. He commanded the army of Sparta to seige the Greek city of Rhodes. Athena intervenes in his little conquest and asks him to stop. Kratos, being the stubborn brute that he is, pushes Athena aside and ignores herlittle lecture. Kratos heads to Rhodes the size of The Statue of Liberty. Athena quickly shrinks Kratos back to normal size and as if that wasnt bad enough, she also brings to life The Collossus of Rhodes. Thats where the game starts out.gameplay: the combat system has really been perfected. The combat in the first game was already great, so they shouldn't have to change it all that much. The context sensitive commands are back with a vengeance,They appear all over the place it seems. The combat system is overall perfect.graphics: MY GOD!! This game looks nothing like a PS2 game. That's how good it looks. I had to check andmake sure I wasnt playing a PS3. Thats what it looks like. It looks better than any of the PS3 games out. That is saying alot. The environments, character models, lighting EVERYTHING looks outstanding in this game.down to the last polygon. The scale of the game is mammoth, and the PS2 has a bit of a rough time trying to hold it, as you can see from some minor lag issues, but those do not disrupt the elegant size and beauty of this game.enemies: God of War 1 didn't have much to offer in terms of enemies. There were only 3 bosses for God's sake. But that has been fixed. Gow 2 has 2 times more bosses than the first time around. The Collossus isprobably an equivalent to The Hydra from Gow 1. The regular enemies are never the same. The game usesevery enemy from the first game, and adds in a huge whole new beastiary as well. The game is defentiley harder than the first. The enemies are smarter and the new ones have pretty big craving for Kratos' corpse. However the new context sensitive attacks are as satisfying as they are brutal.Sound: The sound is astounding. The musical score in my opinion isnt as good as the one in the first game, but it's still pretty damn good. The voice acting is superb. Christopher Lee does a great job as always, andMicheal Clark Duncan provides a very powerful voice for Atlas. Even though Perseus doesn't last in this game,it's still nice to see Harry Hamlin revisit his old Clash of The Titans role.secondary disc: Every copy of Gow 2 comes with a special bonus disc loaded with special features and behind the scenes extras. There is alot of stuff on the bonus DVD. There is a long documentary, a voice featurette, some spoilers, and a bunch of extras. It's very interesting to see how Cory Barlog and the guys held up making such an incredible game.overall: You can probably see from all the stuff above that I'm strongly recommending this to you. Well, I AM!Get out and buy this game dammit! This is a very fitting end to a great console. God of War 2 is defenitely the PS2's last great game.P.S. F***ing two naked hot chicks at the same time is AWSOME!!

Great series....but
I also have a review for part 1 of this game on this site and rated it a 5, I rate this a 5 because the game and series is one of, if not my favorites, and I've been gaming since the early 80s, but this still ranks as one of my 5 favorite series'.You know most of the good stuff, Kratos honestly believes no one or thing can kill him, and for the most part, he is right. The weapons are a lot of fun, including the often talked Barbarian Hammer which makes Kratos look like a spinning giant hammer when in combo. The Spear is ok, I only used it a few times, the blades of course are the weapon you start with and in most of the battles in the game, they will be enough. Magic is really good this time around, the Atlas Quake is not only devastating, but fun to watch too.Onto the reason I rated a 3 in fun. First, I'm not for sure that many people can play this game without at least looking at a walkthrough or even videos that show how to do some parts. If you want everything in the game you will use a walkthrough. There are parts, Urn of Gorgons, for example, that you wouldn't even think about how to find it without a walkthrough.I personally don't like that. Having to turn my head to the right reading a walkthrough while looking ahead at the screen, usually pausing, and reading, just isn't that fun.My other complaint in the fun area is the same one I had on part 1. Some of the jumps are as a walkthrough said, "Leaps of faith". And after you jump off a cliff 3 times, trying to hit the wall over to your left, you will get a screen that asks if you would like to switch to easy mode, and in parenthesis it tells you only the toughness of battle is changed if you do. Out of the actual fighting parts, one boss gave me a hard time, the Cerberus, but that was my fault, not using the right weapon. I would say though, Kratos probably died a couple of hundred times. Out of those, maybe 10% were in fighting. Speaking of, the Gorgons are back and now you can parry their attack, problem is, I found myself late in the game, getting between two, so I only can parry one at a time. You know the routine, turned to stone, one hit and you're dead. To make matters worse, you now have wings later in the game, so go ahead and try to jump the gorgons and they'll freeze you in mid-air, and when you hit the ground, you're automatically dead.To me this took a lot of the fun out of the game. I didn't want to stick around in areas to try and find the secrets because I knew there could be another of these jumps or cheap kills like the Gorgons do, around the corner and you go back to the last checkpoint when that happens.Still a 5 overall, I honestly can tell you that I had bright red thumbs and analog stick indention on one finger on each hand from trying to wiggle the analog stick to break the stone the Gorgons trapped me in, over and over and over and over and over and over. Sure the parry works, but when between two you can't jump them since they will freeze you in the air. I thought these parts made the game monotonous. I guess that's what we get for saying the first part was too short.

Sequel did the original GOW justice!
GraphicsTo me, this game is without a doubt the best looking game that has ever, and will ever, come out on the PS2 console. While the Final Fantasy games may have it beat on the "cinematic" graphics, I'm sorry but the gameplay graphics is far superior that even some, or most, games out there on the 3rd generation consoles. The level of detail is astounding. There weren't any slowdowns or glitches that were apparent. There were a couple of "loading" issues, but that's probably my consoles with all the dog and cat hair in it. Every little nook and cranny was definitely squeezed out of the PS2 console on this game.AudioAs good as, if not better than the first game. Definitely play the game with the music as loud as possible. The one thing I wish the movie "300" did was a better soundtrack. The heavy-metal crap they played didn't really fit right with the whole Spartan-thing. In this game, they used big orchestras and strings. The sound-effects were just as good as the first, and I'm glad they brought back the same dude that did the voice of Kratos (TC Carson). There are a couple of surprise voices in there, too.GamePlayThey stepped it up with a vengence. I was worried that they added more weapons and moves, and that they were going to make it too clunky and complicated. Far from it. They garnered as much button combos on a PS2 controller as possible without being a mess.Story LineI thought the first story was excellent. In the sequel, it basically scaled up from there. If you love Greek mythology, this game is for you.PlayabilityI finished the game with about 15 hours on the clock; just a tad longer than the first. However, the story and the momentum of the game made it feel longer, but in a good way. Oh, and if you weren't satisfied enough, all the accumulative weapons and powers are retained, if you wish to play the game again.OverallDefinitely one of the best "sequels" in any medium. This sequel is what Aliens 2 and Empire Strikes Back did for movies. Everything is bigger and better. As for the PS2, this game is a great send-off to the console, if it ever does die. If not a send off, it's definitely given it a few more lives thanks to this game.

Hell of a game.
I'll be honest. I don't like American games much. That may isolate me from many gamers out there, but I just like the flare and over the topness(a word?) that a great Japanese game can deliver(Resident Evil 4 anyone?).Well, God Of War 2 is an American game, and delivers far beyond what i'd expect from many games in it's genre from here or Japan. The graphics are amazing for PS2(especially if your TV supports Progressive Scan). The sound is great. And the gameplay is fun and addictive.Kratos' moves are still as wild and violent as they were from the first game, but there are more puzzles and other things to mix it up this time around. There are Pegasus levels that you have where you travel from one place to another. They are done if the view of, oh say, Star Fox. They are a blast to play, and made me wish they had more of them in the game. Everything is well executed in this game, and the boss battles are so over the top, that sometimes you're just like "how the hell am I going to beat THAT?!". That's basically one of the best parts of these games. It all looks so big and complex, but at the end of the day, it's easy and fun to get into.I love the sheer intensity, style, and bombast that these GOW games have. And I have to give it up to this one as being a bit better than the first one. It's more refined. It has more puzzles this time around, so some fans may not like that as much. Also, the story isn't quite as good as the first one, but it's a logical progression, and I really can't see where else they could have taken it.All together, God Of War 2 is a must own for the aging PS2. Honestly, there aren't any games on any of the next-gen systems that are this good yet. A must have.

Brilliant!
There are plenty of other reviews so I won't waste a lot of time restating what's been said before. This game is simply brilliant. It's hard to compare it to the first even though they have VERY similar mechanics. The main differences I'd say, the first game the story was better and in the second the timed button pressing segments are a little more relaxed so you can spend more time enjoying the cool moves he does. The game has an epic feel to it, which I don't use lightly. The cut scenes and much of the game are simply beautiful. You're also in environments which actually feel huge. At one point you have to run across this giant chain and while it's slightly annoying to control with the camera being fixed it really puts you in the right frame of mind. The new grappling hook mechanic is executed well. Some of the puzzles are very obvious, some are a bit tougher, but nothing felt unfair. You're also given a very limited area so it's not like Prince of Persia 2 where you might not know if you're in the right section of the map to complete something, if all else fails you can just try to smash everything and see if something breaks open that you can use. I found it to be an excellent mix of combat and puzzle to keep you interested throughout. Also, the punishment for dying is not horrible so you can experiment and die a few times without having to do a long sequence over and over and over again just to get up to that point. The two God of War games are some of the best on the PS2 period. One note though, they're mature titles. There's not only a lot of violence, decidedly unheroic actions, but partial nudity. If you've got young kids, you may want to pass on it. Otherwise, buy this game, it's awesome.

its awsome
I was seventeen when I played the first God of War, and I was hooked on it all the way through. It had a briliant story, great environments, with a great ancient Greek mythology atmosphere. The story told of a Spartan warrior named Kratos, who is desperate to redeem for his past mistakes. He had pledged his life to the service of the god of war Ares in return for saving his life. Ares had tricked Kratos into killing his wife and only child. In the game he embarked on a quest to get his hands on the unfound pandora's box, containing the ultimate power capable of defeating a god. With this power Kratos managed to defeat Ares and become the new god of war in his place.I was thrilled when I heard a sequal was being made. However I was annoyed when I went to get this on the orginal release date and found I had to wait an extra month until its release. But I have the game now, so no worries. I got the game on the day it was released (it was a friday) and I completed it on monday. The game is just as good as the other, with the same moves, some extras and new weapons. Zeus betrays and murders Kratos. Kratos then seeks out the three legendary sisters, who are his only hope of returning to the past an changing his fate. He attempts to return to when Zeus betrayed him and murder Zeus himself. The game ended with a cliffhanger, indicating there will be a God of War 3. But that of course will be an extra 2 years. Less hopefully.Which one is harder to beat? God of war 1, or God of War 2? There was a point in the first game that took ages for me to get through. It was in the underworld, when you climb the rotating spiked tower. Yet there was no difficult moments in God of War 2. Yet in God of War 2 there were more things to get through that required logic skills, some I got stuck on, but I only got stuck on 1 in the first game. That's something I must warn you about. God of War 2 is excellent and very fun to play, It's a game I promise won't dissapoint you.
