Q: if it has a battery then what are the red and black wires for?

The red and black wires are for 12 volt DC hookup. Black is negative and red is positive. The way I use it is as a clock I can check in the middle of the night by flipping a switch. That way the light of the numbers aren't keeping me up at night. When I want to check the time, I flip the switch. Then off when I'm done
