What does over on ear mean?

Over the ear headphones are designed to completely cover the ear, which means that someone cannot actually see your ears, and these headphones usually provide a better overall sound since external sounds are less intrusive. On the ear headphones are different, in that they sit on the outer ears but do not cover the ears completely, thereby allowing some external sounds to filter in. Hope this clarifies the difference between both types.

No u don't need anything else. they basically plug right into most devices. My cell is a note 9 and it plugs into there too. Also very durable.

Besides the wiring, are these mainly made if plastic?

Mostly hard plastic. But they are well made and the sound is extraordinary for the price. A great value. I recommend them.

does the end of the headphone cord connect to iphone 8?

I'm pretty sure the iphone 8 doesnt have a headphone jack (unless I'm stupid and it does), so you'd need an adapter that connects to the usb to use these. These should work on any device that have a 3.5 mm headphone jack
