We just had our third child and this is our third audio baby monitor (never saw the appeal in the video monitors). Five years ago we purchased a Phillips Avent baby monitor. It worked well enough, but had some trouble getting the parent device to "connect" to the charging base and therefore had trouble holding a charge. We purchased the VTech DM221 (silver monitor) for our second child because we didn't want to spend a lot on another monitor. That one had (and still has) linking problems between the parent unit and the child unit. It frequently beeps in the middle of the night and wakes us up. Terribly annoying.So then we had a third child. We chose this one hoping they had improved on the DM221. We love it. We've been using it over two months now and have had no linking problems. It projects this brilliant, crystal clear celestial scene on the ceiling (or wall or wherever you want to put it because it has a swivel base). The fifteen minute scene has parts that fade in and out to keep the child interested. There is also a repeating melody that can play along with it, but the projection can run in silence if you prefer. The monitor gives you a basic menu with volume control, sensitivity control, and sound notification options. We did find there was a little too much white noise on the highest sensitivity so we have that set at three and it has been perfect. I dislike being notified of every insignificant sound coming out of the room anyway. Cries and coughs and speaking come through great - and of course the parent unit has the ability to speak to the child's unit too. It also comes with a two parent unit option if that's something you're looking for. Oh did I mention I bought this for my third baby (currently 5 months and still in our room) but my two year old loves the projection so much it is now in his room. A second unit should be arriving next week. Fantastic monitor with a great mid-range price.Update: Been using this monitor for a year now. That being said, my experience is based solely on audio only monitors.I have 3 kids. I've owned many monitors. Usually the most I've gotten out of them is 2-3 years tops but I've always had an extra monitor as backup also. So with all the different features available on the different models, I've come to the conclusion that this one fits the bill. I've also had the best luck with vtech monitors as far as brands go. The talk feature is wonderful. The range and clarity are fantastic. My absolute favorite though is the light projection and music. Some people complain it's loud through the parent unit... Eh, it really doesn't bother me. I just turn the volume on the parent unit down until the music stops, which is 15 minutes.This is really a great monitor. I know it doesn't have all the bells and whistles but unless there is a specific reason, I don't see the need for anything more. We were using a pair of cordless phones in intercom mode before this, which worked fantastic actually, but the battery life was an issue. We will be using these plugged in almost exclusively. It WOULD be nice if the transmitter had a large rechargeable battery in it for when Baby travels with us or we put her to sleep in odd places, but whatever. The projected mural thing is not really that exciting a feature. As for the vibrate and "audio alert" thing, all I can say is that the baby would have to be in an almost complete meltdown to trigger the audio and / or vibrate alert.
