I’m not sure what to make of this book…
Let me start by saying it’s not a bad book, for the £13 I paid from Amazon resale for a perfect unread copy it represents decent value for money, at full price, I’m not so sure. The book appears to have been either translated into, or written by someone whose first language is not, English. As a result it comes across as slightly clumsy, however this is the least of the book’s issues. There appears to be no structure to it at all, just a series of random articles, in no particular order, and of no consistency. The book starts with an item about Nicholas Hyek and the foundation of the Swatch Group.Following on from that a section entitled “10 Ultimate Watch collection” with a brief paragraph or two about each watch.Followed by EIGHT pages on the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms and then, randomly, a page about Albert Einstein. While the reader is still wonder about the relevance of that, the author goes completely off topic with four pages about an hotel in Florence, followed by another 4/5 page review of one watch.Next we have a chapter on watch and car brand collaborations, to give you an idea of the depth of coverage I will now reproduce the entire section on the tie up between Panerai and Ferrari;“I really like Panerai and found it very exciting that the two famous Italian brands Panerai and Ferrari were to work together. After a few years Hublot took over as Ferrari’s partner in 2011.”And that’s it. Bob Woodward this guy is not. The book is also peppered with inaccuracies, Gerald Genta being credited as designing the AP Royal Oak, but illustrated with images of the Royal Oak Offshore, which was the work, as 30 seconds on Google would have told him, of Emmanuel Gueit. All in all not a terrible book if you just want something to idly leaf through, just don’t expect too much…
