I have read literally dozens of Rock Bio Books with many being about this band, the books stands out for the author's writing and expertise when it comes to this subject matter. I highly recommend it and didn't want it to end. Awesome Freaking Book!!!

Didnt love ir but it was entertain to read. Not a lot of facts we,ve already knew (as a GnR average fan).

If you are a guns and roses fan, and you love GNR from appetite for construction, to patients, to use your illusion one and two, and you even love the spaghetti incident, then this book is for you! Very well written, with lots of insight a new revelations for the true guns and roses fan! I highly recommend this book; it's just so well written and easy to read.

I very much enjoyed reading the history of Guns N' Roses as well as the personalities of each band member. Nice photos incorporated as well. Good biography writer who kept you interested throughout the book.

I concur with Eric Katzan's review below: I guess if you are a rabid GnR fan who knew them back in LA before they broke big nationally, and you've digested every bit of information about them that has appeared over the years, then you won't learn much if anything from this book. But, if like me you became a GnR fan in the summer of 1988*, when Sweet Child 'o Mine burst all over the radio, bought their records, went to a few concerts, but never really dug in to the deep dirt about the band, then i believe that, like me, you will find this book to be quite informative. It's a nice easy read that compiles information on the band from other sources, thus saving the reader the trouble of digging back through all of them yourself. Davis captures the flavor and spirit of the era from the mid-80s through the early 90s, from the glam scene in Hollywood as it exploded nationally, the impact of thrash/speed metal on rock music, and then later the emergence of Seattle grunge, and GnR's uneasy relationship to all of those trends and scenes. And at around $5 used, you won't be wasting much money in any event. * I actually met Slash and Izzy at a hotel in Orlando in November 1987. GnR, who i hadn't heard of before, were opening for Motley Crue, and after the show some buddies and i tried to follow the Crue to their hotel, but they were whisked away by a helicopter. So instead we followed the opening act and their bus back to their hotel, and hung out for a while with some band members and crew at the bar. It was only 8-9 months later, when GnR exploded nationally, that i saw a picture of the band and said "hey! those are two of the dudes we hung out with!", LOL.

WATCH YOU BLEED ist meiner Meinung nach eine lesenswerte, aber keinesfalls sensationelle Biographie von Guns N Roses. Das Buch beginnt mit den absoluten Anfängen und den mitunter haarsträubenden Jugendgeschichten der Mitglieder und spannt den Bogen über erste Konzerte, den Durchbruch mit dem Megaseller "Appetite For Destruction" bis hin zu dem Kollaps nach den Doppelalben "Use Your Illusion" 1+2 und den diversen Neuanfängen wie Velvet Revolver oder Axl Roses Soloeskapaden bis kurz vor dem seit Äonen angekündigten "Chinese Democracy". Das Buch ist dabei durchaus routiniert (man merkt dem Autor an, dass er bereits mehrere Band-Bios verfasst hat) und flüssig geschrieben. Viel lässt er wohl nicht aus, und es macht durchaus Laune, den heroingeschwängerten Aufstieg von G N R aus vermüllten Hütten in Los Angeles bis hin zu weltweiten Superstars zu lesen... inklusive aller Skandale, die diese Band konstant begleiteten. Vor allem - man kann es sich denken - Axl Rose mit seiner offenkundig enorm instabilen Persönlichkeit, die enormes Talent mit ebenso enormen Stimmungsschwankungen, Egomanien und Launen zu verbinden scheint, ist Thema dieses Buches, und ihm wird mehr Raum eingeräumt als den anderen Gunners zusammen... was aber wohl Sinn macht, da G N R eben auch durch einen Frontmann wie Axl erst ins Rampenlicht gekommen sind und seine Marotten für die meisten Erfolge und Misserfolge der Band verantwortlich waren. Das aber Slash, Duff, Izzy und Steve wichtige Bestandteile waren (gerade Slash und Izzy sind ja viele Hits der Band zu verdanken) verschweigt WATCH YOU BLEED keinesfalls, es rückt nur Axl mehr in den Fokus. Dennoch gibt es auch Kritikpunkte: zunächst einmal ist schlichtweg schade, dass dieses Buch 2008, also VOR "Chinese Democracy" veröffentlicht wurde. Das erste reguläre Album seit Anfang der 90er und gleichzeitig ein unsäglich gehyptes und mehr als umstrittenes Machwerk hätte einfach in dieser Bio drin sein sollen. Sicherlich kann man vom Autor nicht erwarten, dass er in die Zukunft schauen kann, schade ist das Fehlen dennoch.. zumal man einige der Spekulationen des Autors um dieses Album im Rückblick kaum stehen lassen kann. Außerdem wertet der Autor für meine Begriffe etwas zu drastisch. Dies ist sicherlich sein Recht, aber mitunter auch sehr nervig - es wird zum Beispiel penetrant wiederholt, wie absolut unerhört genial (das das sicherlich sehr gute Album) "Appetite For Destruction" war und dem gegenüber "Use Your Illusion" im Jahre 1991 den Fans weltweit vor den Kopf stieß... zumindest Letzteres ist in seiner Pauschalität schlichtweg falsch. Es waren schließlich auch die Singles dieses 35 Millionen mal verkauften Doppelalbums (welches sicherlich auch Füllmaterial enthielt), welche dafür sorgten, dass G N R Anfang der 90er weltweite Superstars und die grösste Rockband des Planeten waren. Auch nach mehreren Jahrzehnten kennt JEDER Rock-Fan Songs dieser Alben wie beispielsweise "You Could Be Mine", "Don't Cry" oder "November Rain". "Use your Illusion" mag insgesamt nicht so zwingend gewesen sein wie "Appetite for destruction", aber es war ein weltweiter Erfolg in einer Grössenordnung, von der die allermeisten Rockbands nicht mal träumen können, und es enthielt einige echte Klassiker. Diesen Fakt verschweigt der Autor ein bisschen zu hartnäckig. Außerdem fand ich es etwas schwachbrüstig, was an Bildern in dieser Bio vorhanden war. Hier wäre mehr drin gewesen, zumal G N R vor 20 Jahren zu den am meisten fotographierten Bands des Planeten gehörten. Alles in allem: WATCH YOU BLEED kann sicherlich G N R Fans ans Herz gelegt werden und ist durchweg lesenwerter Stoff. Als absolut esentiell würde ich dieses Buch aber nicht bezeichnen, viele Überraschungen enthält dieses Buch nicht - oder erstaunt es jemanden, das G N R viel Alkohol und HEroin vernichtet haben und Axl Rose mehr als unberechenbar ist?

Cover had a small wrinkle in it but they replaced it quickly and without hassle. Other than that I was satisfied. It arrived quickly.
