Finally making an intelligence choice
Ruck and Taylor have said what the American workforce needs to hear: that conventional wisdom about "getting into the government and then transferring to something you like" doesn't work. It probably never did, but it certainly doesn't apply today.Yet many schools, parents and well-meaning advisors still preach this to young people. Wait - there is a better way to achieve BOTH a federal job and an appropriate fit for your skills and experience.Don't sweep floors for the IRS if you want to be at the State Department.Don't be a nurse at the VA if you want evaluate drugs at the FDA.You can't get there from here. This little book shows you how to analyze your skills, experience and values. It introduces you to the mission and values of key federal departments and agencies. And it tells you how to find a match between you and a target job destination. As a career counselor, I know I will use this book with clients who need a wake-up call regarding federal employment. The authors have included a great deal of information in this little book: samples of forms you'll need, a reminder of networking strategies, and more than a bit of self-analysis.I think the authors have made a convincing case that the same care should go into the targeting of a federal job as it does in the private sector. You should understand the mission of the agency and the tasks of the position being advertised. And then go for the ones that fit you. See? It's the same logic you use in other aspects of job hunting. When you have worked your way through this book, you'll never again think of federal employment as that giant place where you "get in" and then worry about the fit later. You can get it right from the beginning.

What a Gem!
It is true that good things come in small packages, and this small and powerful book is a great example of that! I've worked with clients for years helping them with the federal job search process and I am always looking for more resources for myself and my clients. I certainly found a gem in "Find Your Federal Job Search Fit." This book is a hands on, nuts and bolts approach with specific step by step guidelines. The Closing Thoughts are great little nuggets to wrap each chapter up. I love to collect quotes and found some powerful additions to add to my list. I was very impressed with the Appendix sections. This book has a great deal to offer in just 242 powerful pages!

I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking federal employment
We can all thank these authors for writing a book that ultimately puts our tax dollars to better use. By helping readers find their federal job fit, this book seeks to create productive and satisfied federal employees. This book combines the “know-how” details needed to obtain a federal job while also addressing the career counseling aspects of whether or not federal employment is a good fit for you. These two talented authors put their federal employment experience to work by providing you tips and advice or federal resumes and the federal hiring and selection process. Unlike other federal job search books that only focus on the technical aspects of the application process, this book takes you through the career exploration steps of assessing yourself (skills, interests, personality and values), knowing your brand and ultimately finding your federal job fit. I would recommend this book to anyone who is considering employment in the federal government. I would even recommend it to people who work in the federal government who are unsatisfied with their position.

A great road map to federal employment
Janet Ruck and Karol Taylor have hit a home run with their Find Your Federal Job Fit book. Addressing the frustrations many experience, the book peels back the curtains from the mysterious and mystifying place that the uninformed federal job seeker thinks applications go to die. From soup to nuts, it outlines the process of landing the federal job of your dreams, one which aligns with your purpose, values, interests, skills, strengths, and personality type. By explaining what various federal departments and agencies do, identifying the top fields of hiring, and sharing techniques for learning about opportunities, Ruck and Taylor provide the road map you need. The book provides a detailed description of the federal job application process, including how to decode and analyze a vacancy announcement, preparing cover letters, and writing a federal resume designed to showcase your accomplishments, experience, and other qualifications. This is a “must-have” resource for anyone exploring employment with the federal government!
