Gateways Through Light and Shadow: A True Relation of What Transpired Between Frater Ashen Chassan, His Scryer Benn mac Stiofán and the Spirits

Very impressive tome
This is quite a substantial book, sturdily bound and printed with some of the illustrations in a few colors which is a nice touch. I do wish it came in a hardback version. As far as the subject matter, it's quite remarkable. While the author gets a bit ... impressed with himself several times throughout the various workings, it's overall a fascinating book and provides a lot of additional detail, advice, and information for contacting spiritual beings, from a working magician and what appears to be one of the best Seers in the realm, that I have not seen in such detail anywhere else.Additionally useful is that scattered throughout the book are new rituals that were (usually rather vaguely) suggested by the various spiritual beings, which the author then built into a proper ritual framework. The author repeatedly tries to get the spirits to provide the crass lucre they are reported to be able to provide, but they seem to have a litany of excuses for why they can't right now, warning against it, etc. - I have seen this same behavior in other books like this (ones that describe actual workings, this book is pretty unique amongst those, though) and whether it's angels or demons, none seems to be able to pony up the cash and they all have some (or many) reasons why. I find it interesting considering how many of the old grimoires specifically talk about obtaining gold and other wealth from any number of spirits.I have one quibble - one jarring thing stuck out in the text and that is when the seer is reporting that the current angel is talking about how Jesus was a carpenter and went into detail about how he would take care with the wood, etc. - many Biblical historians now believe Jesus' primary occupation would have been a stoneworker, and point out that the word that was translated to "carpenter" also stands for "builder" or "laborer" and that while stone was plentiful in the area, trees were not. Far be it for me to question the angel but I have to wonder if this was the Seer interjecting his own beliefs and thought they came from the angel, if the angel was just riffing on what he knew the Seer believed about Jesus, or perhaps Jesus was really primarily a carpenter and the biblical historians are wrong. It does make me want to perform that working and ask for myself.

A must have for novices and adepts alike
Frater Ashen Chassan has done an excellent job once again. This book goes beyond simply explaining his methods of evocation. Frater Ashen Chassan provides us with clear descriptions of both his and his scryer's experiences throughout the myriad of workings they accomplished together. What really shines through his work is a stringent attention to details and unwavering commitment to the material as it has been presented in the grimoires from which he derives his methods. This book is a must have for beginners and seasoned practitioners alike. You won't be disappointed!

A total bore
Written like a college textbook but with no real info at all. If this guy was really seeing angels it would be more interesting than this drivel. The end
