Jack Lemmon and Anne Bancroft are brilliant....the film Industry owes a great debt to Neil Simon!
Jack Lemmon and Anne Bancroft are just wonderful in this film! The comedic rapport is just brilliant because Lemmon and Bancroft have this wonderful chemistry. I have seen this movie several times and I remember certain scenes. This movie gets you through the day and keeps you from jumping off a cliff. REMEMBER the scene where Jack Lemmon describes his "day with the squirrels"...!!!! You cannot top this movie.

Classic masterpiece
Classic movie that never disappoints. Saw this as a child and it always stuck with me: Jack Lemmon and Anne Bancroft are both perfect in this. This is a movie the entire family can enjoy. If you like this movie, you’d probably love (the original) Out of Towners. Both classics

The Prisoner Of Second Avenue Released To Blu-Ray
Warner Archive released this 1975 Neil Simon written comedy/drama on Blu-ray, looking fine in HD, a decent upgrade from the old snapper case DVD, porting over those extras, though nothing new was added. Starring Jack Lemmon and Anne Bancroft as a middle-aged married couple going through various calamities(such as job loss) from their New York City apartment complex over a period of several months, film is reasonably funny and pointed, if a bit familiar and broad.

Humor with a Sweating Dramatic Center, that's Real Comedy
Excellent performances by A-list actor's actors Lemmon & Bancroft. Honestly funny AND dramatic piece that plays like a stage piece dressed up for film. Love the way it thoughtfully and even gently teases and comments on heavy societal issues of identity, interpersonal relationships, even conservativism and liberalism!! For me, this is a fundamentally hilarious comedy with a bittersweet heart at it's center which, naturally, lends itself beautifully to that much more comedy.

Great film!
One of my very favorites! Love Anne Bancroft’s Edna portrayal so much! Jack Lemmon as Mel is incredible! It’s just a wonderful story with so many great moments and fantastic lines! “I’m talking about the plot and all you can say is what plot Mel?!?!” Watch it!

I love this one!
To my way of thinking, this is the highest form of comedy: it is the kind of comedy that makes us laugh and cry at the same time; it is the kind of comedy that captures something about who we are, and presents it in such a forgiving and loving light that we simultaneously laugh and ache. For me, the quintessential example of this is the boxing scene in City Lights, which is as tragic as it is hilarious. "Prisoner of Second Avenue" is, in a sense, an entire play about this boxing scene: it is about the struggle to survive in a cold and almost brutal world. The only difference is that, in the boxing scene, the hero chooses to take a beating in order to save someone else, while here the two heroes struggle to survive as a team. In the final scene, we know that this team has won, not because a new job has been located, but because this team will prevail. What a wonderful homage to the strength of the human spirit! Couple this with the exceptional (as always) performances of two great actors: Anne Bancroft and Jack Lemon, and you have what I think is a true gem.By the way...it's time to bring this in DVD!

It gets old
Neil Simon could be brilliant--remember "The Odd Couple"--but he could be tiresome. Both lead characters are gifted thesbians, but the constant complaining and wise cracks about what bothers them gets annoying. I didn't finish watching it.

A really good comedy and fun for all!!!
I love this film it has what i believe to be Jack Lemmon's finest comic performance, Anne Bancroft is also on top form here in the only comic role that I've seen of hers to date. This is a kind of cross between The Apartment and The Odd couple, but this time Jack Lemmon is married and living with his wife (Anne Bancroft), this was originally a Neil Simon play and as you'd expect most of the film is filmed within their apartment. In my opinion this is certainly one of the very best adaptations of a Neil Simon play, indeed it may well be the best.Jack Lemmon plays Mel Edison who we discover has recently lost his job, with Anne Bancroft playing his wife Edna, basically the film takes you through the tortures that Mel goes through coping with unemployment, robbery, noisy and inconsiderate neighbours and a pick pocket (or was it??).F Murray Abraham and Sylvester Stallone both make early and brief appearances in the film too.Overall and very good and very funny film littered with great lines and fine chemistry between the two leads. Well worth checking out, sadly at the time of writing this is only available on region 1, but hopefully it'll be released in the UK in the non-too distant future.

Splendid
I have wanted this for ages but have always been reluctant to purchase it was the price was close to £30-40: getting it for £14.00 was a real bargain. The is the original audio (english) and/or the dubbed version. I have no complaints about the service or the product: both excellent.

Not what it says on the wrapper
This is a Spanish DVD import. On the wrapper it says that to make a language selection (i.e. English) use the Subtitle and Audio buttons on the remote. This is NOT the case. Do the following in order to watch this great film in English: Insert DVD, "Ariso legal" comes up followed by "Inico","Audio" and "Escenas". Click on "Audio", then "Ingles" and then "Ver Pelicula". The movie starts and guess what, the dialogue is in English! All of this will save you getting very frustrated with the totally inaccurate instructions on the wrapper. Good luck!
