They look like fungus, but we just got this kettle three days ago.** A: Could be mineral deposits, especially if used heavily. Fill with vinegar water mixture and bring to boil. Pour out and rinse well with fresh cold water. That should take care of any fungus (unlikely if you were just heating water) as well as minor calcium or other mineral buildup. I usually heat and pour out one pot after each cleaning to make sure all the vinegar is gone. We also have high mineral content in our water due to lots of limestone locally.
