We like the two colors; beige and brown. We use the brown side down, but it will keep the doggie warm regardless of whichever side you use. The dog got used to it pretty fast. It does make a crinkly plastic sound, but the doggie does not mind. He likes to curl on it, and sometimes drags it around with his mouth but it is durable enough to withstand his teeth. I haven't washed it, yet, but the bed pad light color still looks clean. The thickness is good enough to be used in conjunction of another heavy plush bed, because we mainly bought this to keep the dog warm, and we can feel it gets warm when we pick up the dog after he wakes up from its sleep. This is a great alternative to purchase electrical heated pad which I am afraid to use for my doggie who chews on everything at this time. We are very happy with this purchase.
