I always enjoy a good film with Diane Keaton
I missed this when it his the theatre, but saw it a year or so later when it hit HBO. It's an endearing film that uses a psychological rehabilitation formula for someone who is burnt out on the world, by transporting them to simpler surroundings where they can rebuild themselves. It's been used in other films, notoriously "Point of No Return" with that Fonda girl, and a few other titles. The formula goes something like this; give said person a thing to fix up, and the more they fix it up, they more they fix up their lives.Eh, I guess it works. But to me it's just another strike against sociologist tyranny in Hollywood. Even so the film is entertaining enough that as a hetero male I can safely say that, unlike a lot of today's tailor marketed films, you do not need to be a woman in order to enjoy the story and humor within.I always enjoy Diane Keaton up on the screen as she knows her characters, knows just how to deliver lines, and is just a wonderful actress all around. This film, in spite of the psychological (and perhaps psychiatric) formulation, is crafted with great care. Cinematic lensing, not made for TV shots, were used here, along with some really good dialogue and editing to accentuate the gags and more tender side of the story. Before teenage superhero drivel was up on the screens, films used to be made for a more adult audience without being explicitly sexual nor otherwise tawdry. Baby Boom is one of those films, and really does a good job. I still enjoy both the film and Keaton. And the stream from Amazon is pretty decent. It's more or less DVD quality, and not really a bluray quality print, but it's still a good watch. Give it a shot.

A Classic!
I bought this one for my daughter, who moved up north, purchased a farm, started a family, and has started a small business out of her Kitchen. She is now serving folks all over the country. Her daughter just turned 2, so the similarity was just to comical, I had to buy it.I also bought it because it's one of MY personal favorites!

Such stupid writing
I loved this movie when I was younger. Basically, before I was old enough to realize how a woman of the MC's wealth and education should behave. Diane Keaton's character is so stupid and agitated from the first scene. No way was she a successful businesswoman. The movie treats working mothers as neglectful for leaving their children with nannies, yet often Keaton's child just disappears. One scene illustrates the truly shoddy writing. Keaton is freaking out over her house’s well being dry. She is nearly broke and living in the country in a house she hadn't checked out first. Now it's not explained how she planned to support herself in the country, but whatever. So she gets agitated (again) and starts ranting to a stranger about how horny she is. Her boyfriend dumped her months ago and she never seemed lonely without him in the city. Yet she's about to meet a hot guy so Keaton's character suddenly gets upset over a lack of sex. Then she "faints." When she wakes, she's in a vet's office where she meets the hot guy. Okay, so she "fainted" and the old man dragged her body to the street and into his truck and then into the vet's office. And she didn't wake up. Umm, that’s not fainting and she should really have a few tests done. Instead, she rants to the hot guy about how horny she is. And at no point does she wonder where her kid is despite her being at home when she fainted. The movie doesn't care. Oh, and that dry well is never brought up again and she spends money casually in the next scenes. So much for being broke. It's just achingly dumb. With that said, if you’re young, childless, and know little about the world, you might enjoy it like I did as a teenager.

Compare This to Working Girl
I wanted to see this because I think Diane Keaton is one of the finest actors of her generation. I had always skipped it, passed over it....my gut was right., I should have kept skipping. Not because of Keaton--other than the fact she chose the project--but because it is mired in sloppy logic and trite, predictable outcomes.it certainly is a great cast--Sam Shepard, Harold Ramis, Victoria Jackson, James Spader among others. And the baby is simply adorable (played by twins who also were in the one season TV version). But it is just is not very good. And so many times they sacrificed simple logic for an attempt at a laugh. If you like cute, upbeat movies about women growing up, watch this--you will love it. But if you want to see a talented cast tell a surprising, insightful story that makes you laugh and maybe get a little choked up--go watch Working Girl, a very solid film about life in New York and the unfortunate way people deal with power.Speaking of Working Girl, this film's score proves you really do get what you pay for. Working Girl had Carly Simon write the theme and the film was scored by Simon and Rob Mounsey. Save for a few 90s-style bumps, it's a very solid job. Meanwhile Baby Boom is scored by what seems to be loud MUZAK or painful synthesizers (or both). I bet most of you could not sit through the end credits without either hitting the MUTE or POWER buttons on your remote. I know I did.

Way Too Silly
A contrived plot, an overacting Diane Keaton who is totally unpersuasive in her roles as high-powered executive or baby caretaker, and a general slapstick siliness without many laughs, characterize this cinematic abomination. Avoid.

DVD sticks , big scratch
My disabled daughter loves this DVD. Her original wore out . So I decided to buy her a new one . The one we received is poor quality, scratched and it sticks while playing . The seller must have been aware. I'm going to order her another one . I know its pot luck re the quality . The film is great and brings back happy memories for my daughter and family . We didn't play it for weeks after receiving it so we couldn't return. For the price returning it was not cost effective.

This is one of my favourite films for a chill-out session
This is one of my favourite films for a chill-out session. Perhaps not a totally original storyline, but it works really well - as others have said, possibly down to the magnificent acting by Diane Keaton. The only thing that lets it down for me is that the very young child doesn't age at all - even though they move to the country (to a house that barely makes it through their first winter), and then we see Diane set up a business that becomes so successful an old client of hers want to buy her out..... there's no way that child wouldn't have aged at least a year (more likely at least 2) in the time it would take for that to happen on even a small scale. This DVD purchase was made to replace my VHS copy. I do still have a VCR player, but the tape is getting a bit old and has earned it's retirement - I hadn't realised this film was anywhere near as old as it is !!!

Emotional yet beautiful
My 5 star rating says it all! The storyline to this film is heartwarming yet emotional it's about a hard faced business woman who inherits a child from a cousin who she's seen once. The price of business woman/ motherhood initially costs her a potential promotion and just when she thinks she's got nothing she discovers the new market of fresh baby food and makes her fortune! This film reminds me so much of me and my daughter. No matter how many times I watch this I always shed a few tears it's a beautiful beautiful film

as good as i remembered
Enjoyed this film that I had last watched in the 90s. Diane Keaton is at her best some how making it all right to laugh at a hard working career women struggling to balance work and taking care of a baby left to her when a distant relative is killed. Sam Shepard also manages to be sexy in an understated way as the vet she mistakes at a doctor very funny if also heart breaking in parts

great film.
This is one of my favourite films. I could watch it every week .....I watch it every time I see it comes on TV, so I've decided to buy it for myself. Never mind the reviewers who said the baby remained the same., sooo? It's a comedy and I just love it.
