If I could cut straight with my jigsaw, the holes would have been perfect. But hey, that is what outlet covers and switch panels are for! The gang box sticks out a half inch from the studs. How do you install the drywall without first cutting the hole?** A: the box is only 1/4inch past studs. not 1/2. the drywall will just float over the box. so when you hang the drywall, only use 3 or 4 screws- just enough to hold it in place. then use the magnet to find your box, and cut it out. then finish screwing in the drywall. But you can use anything. You will not come in contact with the inside of the box, maybe the tabs of the outside of box. The outside marker magnet is larger than the inside box magnet and spring tabs. If you are worried about even touching the outside tabs of an electrical box, set your depth on the bit to that of the drywall. **Q: Does the electrical box have to be empty** A: With this kit, yes the box would need to be empty, but they also make something called a plug mark that plugs into an existing wall outlet. Of course that doesn't work for light switches.
