We Have a Number of Coding Bots for Kids, Here's an Indepth Look
Our kids are heavily into coding bots. We have a few, from the sphere shaped Sphero Mini and the Bolt; the Botley Coding Robot - which is very similar to this; the Tech Will Save Us Coding Board and a few others.Like the Botley Coding Robot, this one too comes with an array of resources to engage young, apprehensive or inexperienced early coders. My four year old daughter has taken to mTiny quite quickly and says it's Botley's cousin - as the two look very similar. This one has big electronic panda-like eyes which show all the character. Both have a remote control for coding. There's a range of fun accessories to dress up your bot: He has face masks and flags to carry;36 coding cards to map out your route. Essential for our daughter who's still very much a visual learner. There's 24 double-sided giant puzzle pieces for mTiny to "walk" on, in order to follow your coded commands. There's a simplistic storybook. Which is more of a child-friendly instructions pamphlet with various codes to carry out as you read through mTiny's simple story. We like the idea behind this 'glorified instruction manual', it's made decidedly child-friendly for a reason. A very neat idea, as our young daughter feels in charge. She's not having to follow my interpreted directions from a complicated, more grown-up manual that some other bots have.To Operate:Simply twist the panda's tail to switch 'On', the tail also operates as a volume control. He will then blink his big eyes at you and say hello. Pair him with the remote, a very simple procedure. The 'joystick' like control makes this bot suited to young kids from the age of 3 plus.Coding isn't necessary if you use it primarily as a 'free-moveing' using the joystick instead of by code. Our daughter then quickly graduated to coding when she felt more familiar with him.The coding cards are pretty cool. They remind us of our children's Leap Reader pens with accompanying material. They're interactive! For example, take the facial expression cards: a simple press of the pen like remote - rather like the Leap Reader - and the mTiny will change his eye expressions to match. He'll giggle, laugh and communicate too.The blue movement cards are used to code the bot, by again pressing the cards in a simple pen motion in the sequence you choose. mTiny will then follow your set route. She can programme a whole sequence of moves in one go too before she asks mTiny to carry them out.You can use the giant interactive puzzle pieces. My daughter loves these. Dress him in a mask and have him carry a flag. Move him onto the puzzle with the joystick and watch him change his character into the mask he's wearing and reacting to each card differently when he steps onto it. Our daughter shrieked with delight at this "game". She hasn't seen this before with her other coders. There's also a selection of game cards you can play with mTiny, this is when we realised the remore control is fitted with a gyroscope. Waving the remote in the dictated way and tilting it will allow mTiny to carry out his sequence of movements. What a wonderful additional technique for our daughter to learn early gyro-controlled coding. The Sphero balls we have also have this functionality by way of pairing it with the iPad which is more responsive in fairness.A well designed and fantastic early learning STEAM set.

Impressive.
The media could not be loaded. This makeblock is brilliant in many ways. It is so cute and appealing to young children and it definitely wins in that aspect. The small remote is easy to hold and use and even small hands should have no trouble with using it. Both parts plug into the included cable that can charge both at the same time. The panda makes little noises that are generally cute but after a while it can be grating. The eyes and wheels light up too. You also get some pretty detailed instructions and some boards for children to use with the robot. I’ve attached a video of him on the street puzzle, we really enjoyed doing this, although the children found it hard to slot the puzzle pieces together and they are nine. What impressed me was how clever it was, the remote helps you guide it around the streets and the robot reacts very well to your commands, even with subtle movement. As the robot ‘drives’ around the streets it makes noises that work for where they are, like sirens at the police and ambulance parts or cats meowing when you drive past a cat on the street. It’s so clever and even more so when you realise that the underside of each puzzle piece does something completely different. The battery life is decent and the eyes tell you what the charge is. You also get some cardboard animal masks use put on him but they do not stay on well and gradually slip off. Overall though this is an amazing product that I would recommend.

Problem Solving Made Fun
Review for Makeblock mTiny Programmable Robotic Toys, Early Children Coding Education Robot, Remote Control Toys, Screen-free Coding, Tap-to-Code, Gift for Kids.An interactive and electronic toy which encourages children to exercise creativity and problem solving skills. The pack includes the main robot which is shaped as something resembling a cute wide eyed panda character, programming cards to programme in simple instructions using an electronic pen as well as various themed maps which can be used in a variety of ways and layouts to create an interactive and creative playing experience. The idea is to encourage creativity and mistakes to help a child start to explore learning problem solving and more importantly to allow them to create their very own unique experience. I think this really is a great toy to encourage less screen time and more actual interactive playtime, with several activities included in the box to allow a variety of different games to play an experiment with. Overall an educational and problem solving toy to encourage thinking and logic, which will give hours of fun, anything to drag children away from staring at screens..
