Fantastic at macro, great for portrait. If you want a Sony lens with stabilization and fast auto focus, this is the right choice. But you can't buy lenses from Amazon anymore. You HAVE to buy lenses through B&H now. I'm not going to give a product less than a 5-star rating just because Amazon (not a 3rd party seller, Amazon itself) sold me a broken and clearly used product as new. People in the photography community know to never buy lenses through Amazon's 3rd party sellers because of the scams (Google it, it's very rampant and there's a few well-known kinds of high-ticket item scams out there through Amazon 3rd party sellers). And I thought that buying new items through Amazon proper would be safe. Nope. Amazon sent me the lens. The body could not talk to the electronics in the lens, and the lens would not even manual focus. I inspected the lens and saw dust on the last lens element, and then checked the first lens element (the lens that faces the sensor), and saw a finger smudge and more dust. I checked online and found that the lens hood and a protective reinforced bag should have came with the lens and it did not. Unfortunately I had a wedding gig coming up so I didn't have that lens available for the job. So that cost me a little bit. In short, GREAT lens. Can't recommend it enough. But you can't buy lenses and other high-ticket photography items through Amazon Prime anymore.
