Seriously scary!
I don't scare easily and didn't find the book particularly scary, although I admired the psychology and enjoyed the read, but oh boy... this series really shook me up. I think it's because the childhood nightmares triggered recollections of my own, and some of the scenes were pretty horrific. There were parts of this series that were hard to watch. I even had a nightmare after binge-watching episodes 3-6 ! Honestly, horror films don't scare me much at all but this one did... it's good. Really good!

Superb adaptation of the Shirley Jackson classic novel
If you expect a special effects show with gory scenes and frantic action, well, this is not for you. This is aslowly unfolding story of psychological terror. The scenes are theatrical and the acting is superb !The editing is characterized by continuous jumps back and forth in time and requires a special attentionby the audience to be fully appreciated. The reason for telling the story of the Crane family in this apparently asynchronous way becomes clear in the last episode of the series and is one of many surprisesof the show. With no doubts this is an high quality product under any viewpoint. As such it is directed to asophisticated audience.

Would be improved if available on Blu Ray
I loved this series when it first appeared on NETFLIX. I’m a real fan of Mike Flanagan and this is one of his best. The only downside is that it wasn’t available in Blu Ray. It’s a dark series by design, and would have benefited from improved picture quality. It looks better on NETFLIX via HD than on SD on the DVD.

Really didn't like this
I was looking forward to watching this after seeing good reviews but I was disappointed. Other than a couple of jump scares it was really boring. Not much time was spent at Hill House at all. The majority of the scenes were set in the present when all the kids were older with the odd flash back scene to when they were kids. It was also hard to tell who was who.

Outstanding!
For anyone wanting scare out of your skin horror it's not what THOHH is about, what can I say the scares are few and far between but done brilliantly and at the right times, it's the feeling you get from the whole experience of the series mainly down to brilliant character development and casting, the editing, the soundtrack, obviously the script it's the whole experience of the haunting of hill house.... 10/10

A slow, cold burn
We started watching this yesterday afternoon. My wife gave up after the first episode, but I thought I'd stick with it and watch it on my portable player... Ye God's it's good. What are the similarities between the novel and the tv series. If you look hard enough they are there, but try to forget one of my favourite books and just enjoy it for what it is. A darn fine ghost story. Don't expect it to rattle along at a pace, but do expect to be scared. And I do mean scared. For a start I'll never look at a bowler hat the same way. The story is very much a set of character studies that gradually builds into a scary climax.Well worth the watch.

Tense and thrilling horror story
This is an incredibly well done and tense psychological horror story. The show follows the Crain family in present day, with flashbacks to their childhoods living in Hill House. What the writers have done really well is that for the most part the show keeps you guessing as to whether or not there's a real supernatural threat or just the real world problem of a family suffering from hereditary mental health issues. The pace, story and acting is fantastic all round. This show really impressed me.
