Well worth the price tag.
Upgrading from the old Sony Xperia XZ1 as after 3 years the battery has just started to lose charge. One of the reasons I chose this phone was It's size, it's slimmer and perfect, making it easier too hold and use. A good pocket size compared to most other phones on the market right now, Bigger isn't always better. The phone is much faster, the screen and audio is a great upgrade. My XZ1 Camera was very good and still took great pics this was due to having Sony camera tech and 19MP. This phone has 12MP but 3x cameras and this is still more than enough as it gives you more shooting options and has Sony camera tech. The cameras works well and pictures look great. The phone it's self looks top class and well built. But it's now in a case so not that important. I have dropped my XZ1 many a time and it just seemed to bounce back laughing. It also got accidentally submerged in water a few times and even though it made the sound go funny for a few hours it did nothing to damage the phone. So I have great confidence in the Xperia 5 as it has even tougher glass and the same water protection. All works well so far and I am happy with the battery life. Price point is great compared to the newly released Xperia 1II. Which the main difference is the 5G chip and slightly better stats but I won't get 5G where I live for years and I'd rather have the £600 difference in my back pocket. Worth the money and would recommend.

Another winner from Sony
I don't normally write reviews, but Sony deserves more attention for their work in mobile. This is a brilliant phone that absolutely deserves the consideration of anyone considering a high-end phone. I was very nervous about the screen dimensions on this phone. So much so, that I originally went with a Samsung - which was a big mistake. Samsung's version of Android is very invasive. It was also missing a lot of the little details. For example, this phone has a tiny little notification light. That light means that I do not have to pick up my phone to see if I have any messages - I can just look for the light. Also, the fingerprint reader is on the side. This is great because... One - this is where my fingers go when I am holding the phone. Two - it means I can log into the phone without having to pick it up. I don't want face recognition either because, again, it means I have to pick the phone up to check notifications. Yes - these are minor details on a phone with this much tech, but these minor usability decisions really add up. The screen and camera are both brilliant. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if Sony is supplying these components to other high-end manufactures like Google and Apple. Do those products have a better screen or phone? Maybe. But anyone who says they can tell the difference is full of it. Sony's screen and phone are both a 10. What more do you want? This phone comes with the fastest processor on the market right now. You will not find a significantly faster phone. So that's easy. I was worried about the screen size, but shouldn't have been. This phone is plenty wide. The fact that it is taller really means that you have more screen space for most activities (web, mail, movies). Think of it as an ultra-wide monitor. Nothing is really lost - just gained. ...and it actual feels really nice in my hand. The bottom line is that if you are looking for a phone from a respected manufacturer who will take security and data privacy seriously (you should be) this is the best phone on the market right now. Not the best phone for the price. The best phone.

Good as new
As good as new. I can't comment on how good it is compared to other phones ; I just wanted a replacement for mine, which came off second-best in a fight with a paving slab.

Fast with good picture quality
This was a rreplacement for a Sony XA2 which I really liked but with more apps loaded was becoming too slow and running out of memory. This phone is much faster and has 128Gb of memory which is great. Cameras seem fine for my undemanding use, although the app that detects a particular motion as meaning I am about to take a picture has not got it right yet. The biggest problem for me is that the screen width in portrait mode is just a bit too small for easy reading (a consequence of the 21:9 aspect ratio) it is of course not impossible but just a bit irritating. The benefit of the widescreen may be that it is great for films but most pictures are not photographed in this aspect ratio so the narrow width makes the photos smaller in both portrait and landscape modes. What I really wanted was a small phone so I can put it in a trouser pocket - with a lot of memory, fast processor good screen and camera and not too much unneccessary software - probably reflecting my advancing years, so Snapchat, TikTok etc. are not really my thing and the ability to work as a platform for them is not required. Overall there are some great features and a really capable phone but that aspect ratio...

I love Sony but this phone is rubbish
I always buy Sony if there is an option, so last Oct I bought this phone Sony Xperia 5 and i can safely say its rubbish. Hardware is great, but a phone comes down to software and Sony have proved once again they can't do software. Its so slow, everything you do has a delay, end up clicking everything twice as I think the first touch has not registered. Edit : - Received 2 updates within 2 weeks of writing this review, that helped a bit, but forgot to mention how incredibly bad the fingerprint reader is, its so bad its hard to even get the initial fingerprints to register and then only unlocks about 1 in 3 times. Mostly have to input code, my 15 year old laptop has a better fingerprint reader so not adjusting stars.- end of Edit Please Sony just acknowledge you can't do software and release phones with stock Android so i can keep it up to date instead of waiting months (if at all) for security updates from Sony. You can even tell the phone hardware department at Sony probably has very little to do with the software, and its the entertainment divisions that are messing everything up by trying to get the money grabbing hand into my life through the phone and are happy to sacrifice the products usability. I have Sony apps (can't remove), WhatsApp and Audible on the Phone, that is it. I like the 21:9 aspect ratio, battery life and as always the build quality is great. I have the OnePlus 7 as a work phone and its better in almost every way. Description could have been clearer about having to sacrifice one of the 2 SIM if you want a micro SD card. When i bought this phone it came with some free headphones that were a real pain to get, it was worded as if they would come from Amazon with the phone, but you had to apply to a (not trusted by me) 3rd party, NOT HAPPY. It would also be good if Sony could release a new tablet with USB C and Stock Android, so i don't have to carry about the old USB micro cable. Thx

Good to be different
I bought the Xperia 5 on Black Friday which was £539 down from £699. For £539 I am very haopy with it. When I took it out of the box I was suprised by how compact but how tall the phone is. The materials used are very premium but like most premium phones I think it suffers from not being too holdable without a case. The phone is slippy in the hand. The fingerprint sensor is back on the side which I very much prefer (I had an XZ2 which was below the camera lense which I never took to). The fingerprint in all honestly was attrocious but since the upgrade to Android 10 its become the best one I have ever used. I would have prefferred the fingerprint to double up as the power button on my old XZ1 Compact. No headphone jack but doesn't bother me as I used wireless earbuds and there is an adapter included in the box with a pair of Sony standard earohones. The display is beautiful, crisp and vibrant. It took about two weeks of using the 21:9 display to get used to it and I initially hated it. Now I don't think I could do without it. Being able to watch a YouTube video at the top of the screen and browse Amazon and eBay on the bottom three quarters is simpoly brilliant. The battery life is fantastic. On my first day using it from 8am I absolutley hammered it with apps, browsing, YouTube videos, Netflix and using spotify. After constant use all day with stamina mode NOT activated by 10pm I still had 28% battery. Audio is high quality and stable. Sony are always good in this regard along with the camera quality. The pictures are the best I have seen on a Sony phone and works exceptionally well in low light. The build quality is reassuring me that this phone is gonna last me at least two years as I have started buying phones outright instead of getting a contract.

Better Than Anticipated
This phone was bought to replace my 4 year old Sony Xperia Z5c, the compact format of that phone suited me very well. I was therefore a little apprehensive with the shape of the Xperia 5, which although of similar width was noticeably longer. In the event I have not noticed this to be a problem, but there are certainly many features that more than compensate for the old familiar format. The Battery life is far superior to my old phone, the screen resolution, colour and general overall appearance is a noticeable step up. I love the camera with its three separate lenses (1X, 2X and Wide Angle) and picture quality is wonderful, to the extent that I now rarely use my DSLR, the images from the phone are so good. Transferring all my Apps and Data from my old phone to the Xperia 5 was a doddle and I now enjoy a blistering speed which more than makes up for the half day taken to set up the new phone. The later version of Android took a little getting used to but now that I've got used to it, even that is better. All in all I'm glad I took the plunge to replace a very much loved favourite, this phone is so much better!

It's light-ish and I was surprised after while I wouldn't go back to chunky xz premium
I was sad to say bye to my Sony xz premium because for some reason it just died after 2 yrs and I need it a new phone asap . So far this phone works well , finger print reader works fine, of course if you have dirty fingers or reader it doesn't work properly, just as some comments said it's rubbish, battery life is great - same depends what you doing, playing games eats a lot and I need to take it out from the case as it get overheated sometimes. Resolution it's great , fast phone great photos and sony apps
