Just works right. Better than anything else!!
I worried about spending the money but after the first few holes it was obvious this is absolutely worth the money. The hard shield keeps your gun perpendicular to the ceiling the blades cut without tearing up the wallboard the depth setting is just great when you have to cut just the wall board and not cut into a trussJust read and follow the instructions because you need to put the blades on in the correct orientation. You need to tighten bolts the way they tell you. If you do those things this is perfect had to drill 60 holes and not one of them changed size or was drilled in properly or caused a problem with my wall board can't recommend this any higher

Sturdier than it looks in the photos
I was skeptical when I first read the reviews, but now having used the X-230+ I believe these positive reports are real. The plastic is thicker than it appears in the product photos, and the cutting mechanism is high quality. So it seems quite durable. After cutting 14 recessed light holes I couldn't imagine doing it without this tool. Without the X-230+ my face would probably be covered with ceiling plaster powder. I found rather quickly that the trick is to use one hand to push the plastic cover against the ceiling, and the other hand on the drill - not both hands on the drill. It took about 20 seconds to cut through 1" thick plaster. The cutter is very sharp and effective. I don't know why anyone would use the optional vacuum attachment because the plastic is already excellent at catching all the debris, and you can vacuum the container after lowering it to the floor. Having a hose dangling from the unit would only cause more operator fatigue.

Worth the investment, even for small project!!!!
This tool was definitely the MVP for my recessed lighting install. About a week after I had brand new carpeting installed, I decided to do recessed lighting in my 70yr old PLASTER ceiling (this stuff is like drilling through cement compared to sheetrock). After looking at the overpriced low quality crap for cutting light holes they sell at big box stores, vs my original plan of using a sawzall and making a huge mess, I found this thing. I had to cut about 8 holes in plaster ceiling to mount 6" lighting cans. After the first hole I had this overwhelming sigh of relief and disbelief that there is no way it could be this EASY and CLEAN. Don't even waste money on the vacuum adapter, the bowl catches all the mess and you just dump it into a garbage can/bag. This thing cut 6" holes for recessed lighting cans through 3/4" of plaster in under 20 seconds per hole. It was amazing. Now I am glad I have the tool, I will probably put recessed lights in other rooms now without hesitation. Also includes a really nice blow molded carry case that holds everything. Just make sure you have a cordless drill with a 1/2" chuck, and one that has a selectable transmissions, and you want to run this at low speed (I used a 36V dewalt in first gear approx. 500rpm and it cut FAST, approx. 20sec/hole)

EXCELLENT!
Game changer. Very professional. As others have said, it hangs a bit when engaging into the drywall. Wipe down your shift before use and liberally use graphite on it before every session. Thanks to reviewer who said once you start, just keep on going. The few times I messed up was just from being apprehensive. With a good hole saw each 6 inch hole is about 5 seconds. Very little dust. Spring keeps the tray flush to ceiling. Do not walk the saw around at all. Just go straight in. Walking it will damage ceiling finish.Love this thing. Won't be without it ever I hope. Until I get out of this trade and find something better to trade my time for!

Best Tool For Cutting Holes For Recessed Lights, Minor Flaws Easy To Fix.
I use this tool to cut recessed light and ceiling fan holes in the ceiling. The tool is exceptional in catching and holding the dust which would otherwise damage your lungs and make a huge mess. For that reason I have purchased and installed vacuum adapter (~ $25 from the same company) which can easily be installed after you drill a hole in the clear plastic shield (dust collector). My Fein HEPA vacuum sucks the sheet-rock dust during the drilling, making it easier to see the drilling through the clear plastic shield. For good results, use a low speed, high torque drill - you won't be disappointed - but it works OK with a cordless drill (although it tends to jam and sometimes damage the hole). To improve the operation and results of this unit, I have made some improvements:(1) I drilled 20 ~ 30, 1/16" holes in the clear shield (Upper Wall, All The Way Around) in order to reduce the vacuumcreated inside the shield until ceiling hole is cut and air gets in). This reduces jamming of the cutters into the sheetrock because the cutters get sucked - due to vacuum build up - in and pressed against the ceiling. These tiny holesI drilled in the clear shield replenish the air and dust which are much more easily sucked inside the vacuum.(2) I disassembled the unit, took out the marked bar - on which the cutters glide and fasten - grinded the tiny metalstoppers in order to take the cutters out and use Milwaukee Recessed Light Shallow Hole Saws. This saves tons oftime and frustration every time the cutters have to be readjusted/set. Now I only swap the hole saws, no wasted timeand frustration repositioning and tightening the cutters on the holding bar.Note: Only shallow, recessed light hole saws (I use Milwaukee) fit in.(3) The shaft gets jammed inside the plastic shield ball bearing, very annoying trying to work like that. I used drumgrease to make it more responsive (help the shaft move smoothly up and down inside the ball bearing), thereforegiving me better control over the whole cutting process. Next time I will lubricate the shaft/inside ball bearing withTeflon Spray or Graphite Spray.I love this tool, it is very reliable, clean and productive.
