Good shoes, a little clunky
This is a great pair of shoes, depending on what you're going to use them for. I had originally bought them as a "do it all" summer shoe. I wanted something that was comfortable to wear all day and walk in for extended periods, but that also looked good enough to wear with shorts and a nice shirt for a casual night out (something a notch up from standard tennis shoes, with my thought being that something tan/neutral in color would do the job). They do great for the former, not so much for the latter.First, the good:- Fit me true-to-size- Very durable, good quality- Comfortable to wear for extended periods- Tread not overly-aggressive (as compared to other Merrell hiking shoes- Looks fine with jeans or other casual long pantsWhere it missed for me:- Quite a "clunky" shoe, befitting some time out on the trail or other "outdoorsy" activity, but would perhaps look a little goofy/clunky/heavy duty for use at the pool, or if trying to dress "dress casual" with shorts and a nice shirt for a night out.And believe me, I am anything but "Mr. Fashion", and most of us are pretty laid back and casual here in Texas as far as dress goes. But it just wasn't the shoe I was looking for for this purpose. They are actually the shoes I use to mow the yard in now, and they are perfect for this. I would also not hesitate to use them for a light hike (though I have some other hiking shoes I'd likely use instead) or simply for wearing with jeans or other casual long pants around town. They are comfortable. Just look a little goofy with nice shorts/shirt for going out to dinner or whatever.

Solid hiker right out of the box
Without any break-in, I wore these day-in and day-out on a week-long hiking and driving tour of the US Southwest. They are my first Merrell shoes in years, and I needed something for walking and hiking, so they seemed a natural choice. The shoes were comfortable from day 1, provided reasonable cushion and good support hiking uneven terrain, and the soles provided good grip on sandy, slippery rocks. I mean, it's not like walking on a cloud--my feet were sore at the end of the week--but I am quite happy with these shoes, and I would buy them again for the same purpose. I usually buy a 9.5 EE when I can, since I have stubby fat feet. Reviews suggestion I should go up a size, and the 10EE worked great for me. I wore normal athletic socks, and I was neither squeezed nor slipping. A thicker hiking sock would have been better, but I give these shoes and their fit 5 stars.Update: I've been wearing these fairly often for almost a year now. I don't really put them to the hiking test too often, but they confidently handle afternoons in the greenbelt or a long day of moving boxes up and down stairs. They fit well, they are perfectly comfortable on short or long hikes, and they look normal enough to wear with jeans to...well, wherever you want to go. When I use the tab on the back to pull them on (e.g., if I've left the laces tied), I've started to hear some threads groaning, so I expect that might be the first real structural failure I'll see. Which is fine. I think these will last for years the way I use them, and they were a good buy.

The most comfortable sneaker I ever owned.
Hiking shoes, sneakers, whatever you want to call them --> They are extremely comfortable. My foot's a size 10.5, the sneakers were size 10.5, and when I put them on, it's like I've slipped into a little bit of heaven. My feet constantly ache. My tendons get tight, bones get pulled out of alignment, and the result is pain. Walking barefoot on a hard surface causes the tendons and muscles to stretch even more, making it impossible for me to take steps without uttering a stream of "Ouches" and "Oohs!" and "Yeows!"For that reason, I bought a pair of Merrell Moc slip-ons to use for slippers around the house. They literally cradle my feet, providing support all over, as if they were molded to fit and envelope every toe, my high arches, my heels, the bottoms and tops of my feet, and both sides of my feet.Because of the support, my tendons no longer pull the bones in my feet every which way, which means I no longer have pain when I walk. The Merrell Mocs are great for indoors, but I wanted something just as supportive when I ventured outdoors. I saw the Phoenix Ventilater Hiking Shoes, liked their appearance, and ordered them. They're surprising light in weight, considering they could easily function as a hiking shoe and are built to fit the bill. But they also look and feel like a well constructed pair of sneakers and do perfectly well in that capacity. But the biggest reward is how they make my feet feel. Again, as soon as I slip them on and tie them, the foot pain I suffer while using regular sneakers completely goes away. I can't recommend them enough.

These shoes looka dn feel great!
I was looking around for a while for a pair of good trail/walking shoes. I walk about 6 miles everyday with my dogs and to and from work. I wear a size 15 shoe and I was reading around that these shoes run about a half a size small so I was a little worried they would not fit. I got them last night and they fit fine, I have been wearing them all day today and they are very comfortable right out of the box. They look really cool(really cool) and have a great tread pattern. I would advise following the half size rule for these but I can confirm that I wear a size 15 and don't have wide feet and these shoes fit great. They appear to be very well made and the toe guard is strong and I think will help to keep the shoes in good shape for a long time to come. I normally wear Nike's but these shoes looked really sharp and I am glad I made the switch to Merrell's. I am hoping the bottoms hold up because I walk on concrete a lot walking my dogs. They do look like they will hold up. To wrap this up I would recommend these shoes very much. Just remember a lot of people and even the Merrell website said they run a bit small but I bought a size 15 and they fit great.

good for hiking
I have used these shoes for hiking, shoes are very comfortable and have good grip. If you are planning to buy these shoes try to get an inch bigger size than your usual size.

Comfortable, lightweight, well made. Size 'em up a bit though!
I bought these for a USA holiday this summer (for Arizona hikes and driving). We will be walking in very hot conditions and I wanted something, rugged, comfortable, ventilated (no need for GTX) and flexible enough that I can drive with them on. These fitted the bill perfectly. I had also considered Moabs but I went to a few shops and found the Phoenix to be a bit lighter and sole is less rigid than the Moabs (but more than substantial enough for the casual off-road walker!). Maybe they won't last 10 years but I'd be surprised if the they didn't last 5 years! Now to the sizing! I have always been a 9.5 and have been getting 10s recently in most shoes (feet get a bit longer when you are older apparently!). The 10s I buy tend to be a bit on the roomy size. I tried on some Moab 10s and they fitted perfectly well. Unfortunately the shops didn't have a Phoenix 10 to try on but I ordered a 10 in the Phoenix too. Unfortunately, my toe on one foot however touched the end on one of the shoes, only just, but enough to worry me. I therefore returned to Amazon (free to return via drop off - great service Amazon) and got a 10.5. PERFECT! Got about 1cm room at the end. (Should have listened to Yann, who's review suggested an 8.5 for a 7.5-8 foot!!!). If you are a comfortable 9.5 I'd say get a 10 though. They were comfortable straight out of the box (unlike some Salomon Volcanoes I tried on). Maybe Merrell are just a good shoe for me but from the reviews I have read this seems to be a frequent comment (plus my wife chose Merrell and said hers were extremely comfortable too). I have also been driving around in them with no problems.

Very good shoes but a size issue
You definitely need to take at least half a size above your normal size. I am generally a 7.5 sometimes 8, I first bought an 8 thinking I would be on the safe side: they were still too small. I have exchanged them for an 8.5 it is now just fine, 9 would have not be exaggerating too big.
