Do it by hand multiple times, or do it right once.
Speaking from experience, with the 3.0/4.0 V6 rear main seal design, its better to have this tool to evenly press it on the crank than trying to install by hand. More than likely you will be redoing the job. It's the correct tool for the job.

Important tool
Needed this to install the rear seal on my 2002 Ford Ranger 4.0 sohc engine. Other brands were more expensive but I took a chance with this one. Some reviews were good and some were bad. This tool is only going to be used once I hope. It was a good price and arrived on time. Easy to use good quality and fit the seal correct. One time use but worth it.

Products fit and finish needs some work, but the tool did function
Product worked, no issue there, however it took some careful observation because it didn’t get the seal installed perfectly. Upon closer inspection I noticed that the adapter plate you bolt to the crank wasn’t sitting flush due to the finish. The inset hole that centers around the end of the crank is smaller then the protruding center of the crank causing it to sit off center. Make sure you get your seal installed even or you will be enjoying some rework. At least this is the case for my 05 sport trac with the 4.0L

A must for ford 4.0 rear main seal
Product works great with two piece rear main seal with steel sleeve for the ford 4.0 v6 engine. Way better price and value than the otc equivalent that goes for 130+

Worked good
Bit of a learning curve. My seal came with an installation sleev built into it. Took me a bit to figure out how to use it. Once I did it put the seal in with nor problems or damage.
