Its reception with the rubber duck antenna seems fair, as I can pick up municipal traffic from well outside of the city. I was hesitant about this model with the extended battery after reading comments about the battery not staying in, however I have yet to think it can even just "fall out". Without even consulting the manual, I was able to figure out how to use the radio in a basic means. The display is crisp, the buttons light up vividly when pressed (all of them), the construction feels substantial, the battery has yet to even drop a bar after being on for well over 24 hours, and the clip doesn't feel like it would easily break. When driving, I did have a hard time hearing the radio with the windows down. I suppose with as small of a unit and as great of a battery life, you can't really say too much negative about the maximum volume. At reading the description I thought the built in flashlight was a stupid gimmick afterthought by the manufacturers, but it is extremely bright. I got the BF-F9 V2+ in bright yellow, because I could see needing this in a survival situation; the light also has a strobe mode which I could believe as being visible from over a mile away. I got this for hiking, so light weight is key. Boafeng puts the radio weight at 7.2 ounces, and the extended battery weight at 5.6 ounces for a total of 12.8 ounces. The product specifications on the amazon page say 1.2 pounds, but I think 12.8oz is closer to correct. I will update this review with the correct weight after I've replaced my food scale. The features list seem almost like overkill on such a small device, such as being able to change backlight colors for each mode of receive, transmit, and no traffic. You can use single mode monitor, or have both of the set channels in monitor mode. Although you could completely program this device as it sits, after less than 24 hours I am going to order the FTDI programming cable from Baofeng. I am not going to throw this thing around like a toy, but it seems durable enough to take it (I'll bet the volume/power knob would be the first thing to break, however) ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Use in rugged mountainous terrain *by A***R on Reviewed in the United States on August 3, 2017* I live and work high up in the Andes mountains. These little inexpensive radios are simply great. They help me save weight and volume in my heavy backpack. I take clients and students on hikes and climbs with peace of mind since I can establish direct clear communication with our search and rescue base, miles away. We use 1 watt for team communication when we are at sight, 4 watts for mid range distance and 8 watts when needed. This allows us to save and extend battery life on multi-day expeditions. I also bought an additional battery pack that uses AA batteries, for use in extra long trips. I was surprised to hit a repeater located 40 miles+ away with the use of a Nagoya 15 inches antenna.
